This bedtime prayer is for parents and caregivers who want to end the day by bringing their children before God. Pray it in the evening, once the lights are low and the day’s noise has settled, whether you are kneeling beside a bed or sitting on the edge of it. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where your children’s lives call for something more specific.
Bedtime Prayer for My Children
Lord, thank you for this day and for each of my children. Thank you for the small victories and the hard moments, for the laughter at dinner and the homework that finally got finished. Thank you that you have been with them in every hour, even the ones I did not see. I release the day to you now. Take the worries they carried home, the friendship that went sour, the test they are dreading, the thing they said that they wish they could take back. Calm their hearts the way you calm the sea.
Watch over them while they sleep. Guard their bodies and their dreams, and keep away every fear that comes in the dark. Where they feel alone, remind them that you are near. Where they feel unsure of who they are, speak their name and tell them they belong to you. Give them rest that is deep and real, so they wake up refreshed and ready for a new day. Keep them from harm, both the kind we can see and the kind we cannot.
Make me a parent who trusts you more than I trust my own efforts. I cannot protect them from everything, but you can, and I give them to your care tonight. Help them grow into people who love you and love others well. Hold them close, Lord, and let them sleep in peace. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, my children are yours before they are mine. Tonight I give them into your hands. Calm what is restless in them and in me. Guard their sleep, keep them safe until morning, and remind them of your love. Let them wake up knowing they are held. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

This verse names the peace God gives that allows sleep to come. Pray it over your children as a request that their rest would not be broken by fear, and thank God that he keeps watch while they sleep.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
This verse reminds us that rest is a gift from God and not something we must earn by worry. Pray that your children would receive sleep as a gift and that you would not carry anxiety that belongs in his hands.
Psalm 121:7-8
7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Jesus invites the weary to come to him for rest. Pray this over children who are tired in body or in spirit, asking that they would bring their burdens to Jesus and find him near.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many families find that the time right after the bedtime routine works well, once teeth are brushed and pajamas are on but before the final goodnight. Sit with your children, or stand by the bed with a hand resting gently on a shoulder or a blanket. If a child is old enough, invite them to add one thing they are thankful for or one worry they want to give to God. Let the prayer be short enough that a tired child can stay with it.
If you are praying with a partner, you can take turns reading sections, or one of you can pray while the other rests a hand on the child’s back. Grandparents, older siblings, or a trusted friend can also pray this over the children in their lives. On nights when you are too exhausted to read the whole prayer, use the shorter version and trust that God hears a simple request as clearly as a long one.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless you and keep you through the night. May he make his face shine upon you and give you peace that does not depend on the day going well. You are loved, you are known, and you are not alone in the dark. Sleep well, and rise to a morning full of his mercy.
