This prayer is for the hours before a meeting you dread, whether it is with a manager, a landlord, a teacher, a family member or a person you have been at odds with for a long time. Pray it in the car, at your desk, or in the minute before you knock on the door. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words once the first sentences have settled you.

Simple Prayer for a Difficult Meeting

Lord, you already know what this meeting holds, and you know the knot in my stomach better than I do. I am afraid of saying the wrong thing, of being misunderstood, or of walking out feeling smaller than when I walked in. Quiet my thoughts so I can listen more than I defend. Give me words that are honest without being harsh, and firm without being cruel.

Help me remember that the person across the table is also someone you love. Keep my tone steady and my hands still. If I am the one who is wrong, show me clearly and give me the courage to say so. If I am right, let me be patient enough that the truth can be heard. Go into the room before I do, and let your peace be the first thing anyone there feels. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am anxious about this meeting and I cannot fix it on my own. Be present in the room. Slow my heart, guard my mouth, and open the ears of everyone there, including mine. Let me speak with honesty and kindness, and let the outcome rest in your hands. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

When you do not know what to say, pray this verse as a simple request. Ask for wisdom plainly, trusting that God gives it generously and without holding your past mistakes against you.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to turn your worry into specific requests before the meeting begins. Name each fear to God, then pause and notice whether any of the tension has loosened.

Proverbs 15:1

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the tone you will use. Ask God to make your words gentle, especially when the other person’s voice rises or the conversation turns sharp.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

This verse admits that peace is not always fully in our control. Pray for the honest effort to do your part, and release the parts that depend on others.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly as you walk toward the room. Let its reminder that God is with you steady your steps, especially if you feel alone in the matter.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try to pray it at least ten minutes before the meeting, somewhere you can sit still. A parked car, a stairwell, or a quiet corner of the building works well. If your hands feel restless, hold a pen, a cup of water or the edge of your bag while you speak, so your body has something to do besides brace itself.

If someone you trust knows about the meeting, ask them to pray it with you or to pray for you while you go in. Many people find that hearing another voice say the words makes them easier to believe. You can also pray it again briefly on the drive home, thanking God for what he did in the room, even if the result was not what you hoped.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into that room and stand with you while you speak. May he give you clear thoughts, a steady voice and a humble heart. And may his peace guard you long after the meeting ends, whatever the outcome may be.
