This short prayer for my home is written for anyone who wants to bring their house, and the people in it, before God. Pray it in the morning before the household wakes, in the evening once the lights are going off, or whenever a room feels tense or unsettled. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your home needs something specific.
Short Prayer for My Home
Lord, you are the one who builds a house, and I ask you to build this one. Be the foundation under every room, the one who sets the tone at our kitchen table and in the quiet hallway at night. Guard the doors and windows, but guard our hearts even more. Keep out fear, bitterness, and the careless words that wear down the people we love most. Where there is noise, bring peace. Where there is hurry, bring rest. Where there are unpaid bills, unanswered phone calls, or a child who has stopped talking to us, meet each of those with your faithfulness and give us wisdom for the next step.
Make this home a place where people feel safe to be honest and welcome to come back after a hard day. Teach us to forgive quickly and to apologize without waiting to be asked. Help each person here to know they are known and loved by you, even when no one else seems to notice. Let our table be a place of thanks, our conversations be kind, and our rest be real. Thank you for the walls around us and the people inside them. We trust that you are already here. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, be at home in this house. Bring peace to the rooms where people are tired or afraid, and give us patience with one another. Guard our words and our hearts, and make this place a shelter for everyone who lives here and everyone who comes through the door. Keep us close to you today. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 127:1
Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.
(WEB)
Use this verse as the opening line of your prayer. Admit that the home is not held together by your own effort alone, and ask the Lord to be the builder and watchman of your household each day.
Joshua 24:15
If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
(WEB)
Joshua made a public decision for his whole household. Pray this verse by committing your home to the Lord in plain words, and ask him to shape the choices each person makes inside those walls.
Psalm 121:8
The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
(WEB)
Read this slowly when you are worried about someone leaving or coming back. Ask God to watch over the comings and goings of everyone in the house, the familiar and the unexpected alike.
Colossians 3:12-14
12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. 14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.
(WEB)
These verses describe the character that makes a home feel warm. Pray for compassion, patience, and forgiveness to take root in each person, starting with the ones who tend to be hardest to live with.
Matthew 7:24-25
24 “Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. 25 The rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it didn’t fall, for it was founded on the rock.
(WEB)
Jesus compares a life built on his words to a house on rock. Pray that your home would be founded on what he teaches, so that when storms come the walls hold and the people inside stay steady.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time that already belongs to your household, such as breakfast before school and work begin, or the few minutes after dinner when the dishes are still on the counter. Stand in the doorway of the room where people gather most, or walk slowly through the house as you pray, touching a doorframe or a kitchen counter as you pass it. Small, physical habits help the words stay with you through a busy day.
If others in the home are willing, invite them to pray a line each, or ask your partner or a grown child to read the shorter version while you listen. Praying together turns a private request into a shared commitment. If you live alone, pray it for the people who visit, the neighbors across the hall, and the place you come back to each evening.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless this home and everyone who rests within it. May he keep each person in peace, lift their burdens when they grow heavy, and fill the rooms with the warmth of his presence. May this house be a place of grace, where love is practiced daily and hope is never far away.
