This short morning prayer is for asking God to bless your marriage before the day’s first conversations, errands and small irritations begin. Pray it while your coffee is still hot, in the quiet before anyone else is up, or in the car before you walk into the house. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words from the same heart.

Short Morning Prayer for My Marriage

Lord, thank you for this new day and for the gift of the person you have given me to walk beside. Before we speak or move about the house, I bring our marriage to you. Guard our hearts from pride and from the quiet resentment that builds when we stop listening. Soften my tone when I am tired, and give me patience with the habits that annoy me most in my spouse.

Today we will both face tasks, deadlines and people who pull at our attention. Go before us into the kitchen, the commute, the office or the school pickup. Help us remember that we are on the same side. Where there is a hard conversation waiting, give us the courage to start it gently and the humility to hear the other person out. Where there is unspoken hurt, bring it into the light so it can be healed rather than hidden.

Make our home a place of safety and warmth tonight, and let the love we show today be real and ordinary, not performed. Keep us faithful to each other in word and in deed, and draw us closer to you as we go. Thank you for your steady love that never fails. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I give you our marriage this morning. Keep my words kind, my heart open and my attention on my spouse today. Help us serve each other without keeping score, and let us end this day closer than we began it. Thank you for holding us both. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Pray this for the teamwork of your marriage. Ask God to help you see your spouse as someone who lifts you up when you stumble, and to make you ready to do the same for them today.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

(WEB)

Read this slowly as a checklist for the day ahead. Ask God to let patience and kindness show up in the small moments, especially when you feel rushed or unappreciated.

Ephesians 4:2-3

2 With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love; 3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask for a humble and gentle spirit. Pray that you would bear with your spouse’s weaknesses and work to keep the peace between you, even when disagreement is near.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming one need your spouse may have today that you could notice and meet. Ask God to turn your attention outward toward them rather than inward toward your own preferences.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Offer your marriage and your household plans to God, admitting that no effort of yours will build a lasting home without his help. Ask him to be the foundation under everything you do together.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment that already happens each morning, such as while the kettle heats, before you check your phone, or as you sit on the edge of the bed. Keep a small note with the prayer or a favorite verse on the counter or in your bag so you can return to it during the day. Some couples hold hands while one reads the prayer aloud, and others pray silently side by side. Either way, let the prayer reshape how you greet your spouse when you see them next.

If you feel the prayer is too brief for what you carry, pray the shorter version first and then speak more freely in your own words. You might also ask a trusted friend, a small group or a pastor to pray for your marriage on the same mornings. Their prayers can carry you on days when your own words feel thin.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this marriage with patience, peace and a joy that outlasts the busiest days. May he keep each of you steady in his love, and may you meet one another this evening with gladness and gratitude.
