This night prayer is for a mother you love, whether she is near or far, well or struggling, and you want to commit her to God before the day ends. Pray it at bedtime, once the house is quiet and the day’s worries begin to surface. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about her particular needs.

Night Prayer for My Mother

Lord, thank You for the gift of my mother and for the years she has poured into my life. As this day comes to a close, I bring her to You. You know her pains and her fears, the things she carries that she has not said out loud, and the decisions that keep her awake. Give her rest tonight. Quiet her thoughts, loosen the tightness in her body, and let her sleep without the weight of tomorrow pressing on her chest.

Father, watch over her while she sleeps. Guard her from harm, from anxiety that visits in the dark, and from every voice that tells her she is alone. If her health is weak, be her strength. If her heart is heavy with grief or regret, hold it gently and heal what can be healed. If she is far from home tonight, let her feel Your nearness as surely as if I were sitting beside her bed.

Thank You for her faithfulness, for every prayer she has prayed for me, and for every sacrifice she made that I never fully saw. Let her wake refreshed and ready to meet a new morning with trust in Your goodness. I place her in Your hands and rest in the knowledge that You never slumber nor sleep. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my mother is in Your care tonight. Give her peace where she is anxious, comfort where she hurts, and sleep where she is restless. Keep her safe until morning and remind her that she is loved by You and by me. Let her wake to Your mercy, which is new every day. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Pray this verse over your mother as you picture her lying down. Ask God to grant her the kind of rest that comes from knowing He keeps her safe even when she cannot keep watch herself.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use these lines to ask that God would guard your mother through the hours she cannot see. Thank Him that His watch over her never pauses, not even for a moment.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring to mind the burdens your mother has been carrying this week. Invite her to lay them down at the feet of Jesus, and ask Him to give her the rest He promises.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray that anxious thoughts would give way to God’s peace in your mother’s heart and mind. Ask that she would bring her requests to Him before she tries to sleep.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Thank God that His mercies begin again each morning. Pray that your mother would wake to fresh evidence of His faithfulness, whatever the previous day held.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment after the lights are low and your own day has settled, perhaps while sitting on the edge of your bed or in a favorite chair. If you can, hold something in your hands while you pray, such as a cup of tea, a photograph of your mother, or a small cross. Let your hands be a reminder that you are physically lifting her up to God.

You may also pray this with your mother by phone or in person, or invite another family member or friend to pray it with you so that she is covered by more than one voice. If you are unable to speak to her tonight, keep a short note with her name on it and read this prayer over it before you close your eyes.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your mother and keep her through this night. May He make His face shine upon her and give her peace that guards her heart and mind. May she rise tomorrow strengthened, loved, and held by a God who never lets her go.
