This is a night prayer for discernment, written for the end of the day when your mind is still turning over decisions, conversations and choices you have not yet made. It is meant to be prayed before you sleep, asking God for clarity and peace to rest in. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own specific questions into your own words.

Night Prayer for Discernment

Lord, the day is ending, and I am bringing you what I could not settle in it. I have been weighing a decision that feels heavy, and I keep rehearsing the arguments for each side until I cannot tell which voice is yours and which is my own fear or my own wish. I do not want to choose by pressure, by what others expect, or by what looks safest to me. Help me see what is true, what is wise, and what is good. Quiet the noise I carried home from work and from my phone, and let my thoughts slow down enough to hear you.

Show me what I am missing. Where I have been stubborn, soften me. Where I have been careless with the people who will be affected by this, make me more honest. Give me the courage to admit what I do not know, and the patience to wait for an answer instead of forcing one before morning. If the path is clear, let me take the next step without delay. If it is not, let me rest in your timing and trust that you are not hiding from me. Guard my heart tonight, and keep me from lying awake working out every possibility on my own. I hand you the decision, and I hand you the outcome. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind keeps circling this choice. Please give me wisdom beyond what I can reason out tonight. Calm my thoughts, show me the next right step, and let me sleep without carrying the whole weight by myself. Thank you that you see what I cannot see. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When you lack wisdom in a decision, pray this verse slowly and name the specific choice in front of you. It reminds you that asking for wisdom is itself a faithful act, and that God gives generously rather than grudgingly.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage when your own reasoning feels exhausted. Pray it by naming what you are tempted to lean on instead of God, such as fear, approval, or the need to be certain, and ask him to redirect your trust.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse fits the night because it ties rest to God’s protection. Pray it as you lie down, asking that the unresolved question not keep you awake and that you can sleep in his care.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Pray this when you want light for the next step rather than the whole road. Ask God to show you enough to walk by tomorrow, trusting that the lamp he gives is meant for your feet as you go.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

This verse speaks of hearing a voice behind you saying which way to go. Pray it with an open hand, asking God to make his direction audible in the quiet of the night and to help you recognize it when it comes.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this before you turn off the lights, sitting on the edge of your bed or in a chair away from screens. Keep a notebook on the nightstand so that when a thought about the decision surfaces, you can write it down and give it to God rather than replaying it. Putting pen to paper often quiets the mind more than trying to think harder.

If someone you trust is close by, invite them to pray this with you or over you, especially a spouse, a friend or a pastor who knows the situation. Hearing another person ask for wisdom on your behalf can steady you. Even if the decision is still unclear when you finish, you can end the night by saying the words of the prayer again and then stop trying to solve it before morning.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over your sleep give you clear sight for the road ahead. May he quiet every anxious thought and remind you that you are not making this choice alone. As you rest tonight, may you wake knowing his peace is near and his guidance is faithful.
