This bedtime prayer is for the end of the day, when you want to hand your mother and father to God before you close your eyes. Pray it in the evening, once the house is quiet, and read it aloud as written or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Either way, the prayer gives you a clear shape: thanks for them, release of the day’s worries, and trust that God keeps watch through the night.

Bedtime Prayer for My Parents

Father, thank you for my mom and dad. Thank you for the meals they made, the rides they drove, and the patience they showed when I was hard to love. Thank you for the ways they have carried me, even when I did not notice. Tonight I bring them to you as the day closes.

I give you the things they are carrying: the bills on the kitchen table, the tiredness in their faces, the health concerns they have not fully shared with me, and the worries about work, family, and the future. You see every one of them. Where they feel anxious, calm their hearts. Where they feel alone, remind them that you are near. Where they feel they have failed, show them your grace.

Watch over them while they sleep. Guard their bodies, their minds, and their dreams. Let them rest without fear and wake refreshed in the morning. Keep them safe from harm on the roads, in the house, and in every place they go. Thank you that you never sleep and never leave them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for my parents tonight. I give you their worries, their health, and their rest. Hold them close while they sleep, keep them safe until morning, and remind them that you are with them. Let peace settle over our home. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your parents as they lie down. It names the peace that comes from trusting God to keep them, which means they do not have to stay awake guarding themselves through the night.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Ask God to be the watchful one tonight, so your mom and dad can rest. Let this verse remind you that the one who guards Israel also guards your family while they sleep.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release your parents’ over-busy minds. Thank God that he gives sleep to those he loves, and ask him to grant them that gift tonight.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring the weight your parents carry to Jesus in prayer. Ask him to ease their burdens and give them the rest he promises to those who come to him tired.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray that your parents will hand their anxieties to God in prayer. Ask that the peace which surpasses understanding will guard their hearts and minds as they fall asleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time in the evening, perhaps after the dishes are done or while you are getting ready for bed yourself. Sit or kneel somewhere quiet, and hold something in your hands, such as a cup of tea, a wedding ring, or a photo of your parents, so your body stays focused while your mind slows down.

Consider inviting a sibling, your spouse, or a friend to pray it with you, or call a parent and pray it over the phone if you live apart. Speak their names aloud, and pause after each concern to let the Lord answer your request in his own time.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your parents and keep them through the night. May his face shine on them and his peace settle over their home. May they wake refreshed, knowing they are loved by a God who never sleeps.
