This night prayer is for lifting your mother and father into God’s care before you go to sleep. It fits the quiet hours after supper, when the house settles and worries about their health, their finances, their marriage or their safety tend to surface. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart leads.

Night Prayer for My Parents

Lord, as this day comes to an end, I bring my mother and my father to You. Thank You for the years they have given me, for the meals they cooked, the rides they drove, and the patience they showed when I was hard to love. Thank You for every ordinary kindness that I may never have said thank you for. Tonight I lay down the day’s news, the phone calls I dreaded, and the bills they are trying to keep up with. I ask You to carry what I cannot.

Be near them while they sleep. Guard their bodies from pain that wakes them, ease the aches of age or illness, and give them rest that is deep and real. Where fear is keeping either of them awake, speak peace into it. Where a doctor’s report is hanging over them, let them know You are already in that room. Watch over their going out and their coming in, and keep them safe on every road they will travel tomorrow.

Father, mend whatever is strained between them and between them and me. Soften hard words that were spoken and forgive the ones that were never said. Let their home be a place of kindness tonight. And if there is someone in our family who is far away or grieving, hold them too. Keep us all in Your care until morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my parents are tired, and so am I. Hold them tonight and keep them safe in their sleep. Ease their pain, quiet their worries, and mend what is strained between us. Let them wake to a morning that is gentler than they fear. Thank You for them, and thank You that You never sleep. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time just before your parents go to bed, or after you have spoken with them on the phone. Sit somewhere quiet, with your hands open in your lap or resting on something familiar, like the back of a chair. Holding a photo of them or a small object that reminds you of home can keep your attention from drifting while you pray.

If you live with them, pray the prayer softly from the hallway as you turn out the lights. If you live far away, set a regular call or text reminder so the prayer becomes part of your routine. Invite a brother, sister, spouse or friend to pray the same words for your parents, so that more than one voice is lifting them up each night.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord watch over your parents tonight and keep them in His peace. May they wake refreshed, held by a love that never fails. And may you rest well too, knowing that the one who keeps Israel does not slumber nor sleep.
