This evening prayer for my son is for the quiet hour when the day is finished and you want to hand him, and the night ahead, back to God. Pray it at bedtime, after the lights go down, or in the kitchen once the dishes are done and he is upstairs. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words wherever your heart leads.

Evening Prayer for My Son

Father, thank You for the day that is now ending. Thank You for the moments we shared, the laughter, the arguments, the small things that never made it into any conversation but mattered anyway. Thank You that my son has come through another day in one piece, with his body, his mind and his heart still his own. I give You what I could not fix today: the friendship that went sour, the test he dreaded, the words that stung him on the playground or in the group chat. Take those burdens from his shoulders and carry them for him.

Lord, watch over him while he sleeps. Guard his rest and calm the thoughts that tend to race when the house goes quiet. If he is afraid of something he has not told me, let him know that You are near. If he is carrying a question about who he is or where he is going, give him peace in the knowing that You have not lost track of him. Protect him from harm, from the things he cannot see coming, and from the lies that try to take up residence in a young heart after dark. Be his shelter tonight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and so is my son. Settle him now, and settle me. Guard his sleep, quiet what is loud inside him, and remind him that he is loved beyond what he did or failed to do today. Keep him safe through the night and bring him to a new morning with courage in his heart. Thank You for him. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a bedtime prayer in its own right. As you pray it for your son, ask God to give him the kind of rest that comes from trusting that he is not left on his own in the dark.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release your own worry about tomorrow. Pray that your son would sleep as one whom God cares for, and let your own hands open as you say it.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Speak this over your son’s going out and coming in, the comings and goings of his whole life. Ask the Lord to keep watch over him through the night and into every day ahead.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this for the restless thoughts that keep your son awake. Ask God to fix his mind on Him so that peace can settle in where anxiety has been circling.

Philippians 4:7

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring the worries you could not solve today to God, and ask that the peace which exceeds understanding would guard your son’s heart and mind while he rests.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time each evening, perhaps just after he has brushed his teeth or as you tuck the blankets around him. Sit on the edge of his bed or stand in the doorway where he can hear you if he is still awake. Some parents like to rest a hand lightly on a shoulder or foot while they pray, which gives the words a physical anchor. If he is old enough, invite him to add a line of his own, or simply ask him what he is thankful for today before you begin.

If you share parenting with a spouse, a grandparent or a close friend, pray this prayer together or let another adult pray it on the nights you are away. Keeping a small notebook by the bed where you record what you prayed and what God has answered can help you see faithfulness over the weeks and months. Return to the same prayer often, because repetition is a gift when a child’s world keeps changing.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this young man and keep him through the night. May His face shine upon him and His peace settle over his heart. May he wake knowing he is known, loved and held by a God who does not sleep. May the parent who prays for him rest as well, trusting the One who never loses a single child from His care.
