This short prayer for my work is for the start of a workday, a shift, or a difficult project, when you want to bring your tasks, your coworkers, and your effort before God. You can pray it aloud exactly as written in a few quiet minutes before you log in, clock in, or walk through the door. You are also free to use it as a starting point and add the names of people or problems on your mind.

Short Prayer for My Work

Lord, thank you for this new day and for the work you have placed in my hands. Some of what I face today is familiar, and some of it I cannot yet see. Give me a clear mind to focus on what matters most, and help me set aside the things that only drain my energy. Where I feel pressure to finish everything at once, remind me that I only need to do the next faithful step.

Father, I bring you the people I work with, including the ones who frustrate me and the ones I rarely think about. Soften my words when I am tired, and make my honesty kind. If a decision is hard, give me wisdom to weigh it well and courage to speak the truth when it is needed. Let my work be done with integrity, even when no one notices but you.

Above all, let my work reflect your character. Whether I succeed or fall short today, let my worth rest in your love and not in my performance. Keep me humble when things go well and steady when they do not. Guide my hands, guard my heart, and let this day bring some good to the people around me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am heading into my work today. Help me focus on what you have given me to do and give me patience with the people I meet. Keep my words honest and my effort faithful. Let me work as someone who serves you, not only the people in front of me, and let my day end with a grateful heart. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder that your work has a purpose beyond your boss’s approval or your own performance. Ask God to help you do each task as if you were serving him directly, even the small ones no one will see.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed.

(WEB)

Use this verse to hand over your plans for the day. Commit what you intend to accomplish to the Lord, and ask him to shape the outcome in ways you could not have planned for yourself.

Psalm 90:17

Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our hands.

(WEB)

Pray this line as a request that God would establish the work of your hands. Ask him to let your labor bear fruit that lasts, not just activity that fills the hours and disappears.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor plan, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and let it shape your attitude toward the task in front of you. Ask God for the energy to give your whole effort to what is set before you right now, rather than waiting for a better moment.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray these verses when work worries begin to crowd your thoughts. Bring each concern to God in prayer with thanksgiving, and ask him to guard your heart and mind with a peace that does not depend on how the day goes.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer in the car before going into the office, at the kitchen table before a remote workday begins, or in the restroom or stairwell during a short break. Keep your hands busy in a simple way while you pray, such as holding a cup of coffee, resting a hand on your keys, or placing your phone face down on the desk. The physical act can help you return your attention to God when your thoughts start to wander.

You can also invite someone else to pray it with you. A spouse, a friend, or a coworker who shares your faith can pray the first paragraph while you pray the second, or you can text the prayer to a prayer partner who will lift you up on the same morning. Praying with another person often reminds you that you are not carrying your work alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk with you through every task and conversation. May he steady your hands, sharpen your mind, and give you grace for the people you serve. May your work be fruitful, your rest be real, and your heart remain close to the One who gave you the work to do.
