This is a Christian prayer for our children, written for parents, grandparents, and anyone who carries a child on their heart. Pray it in the morning before the house wakes up, at bedtime, or whenever worry about a son or daughter rises up unexpectedly. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Christian Prayer for Our Children

Lord, you know each of our children by name. You knew them before they were born, and you see the things we cannot see: the friendships forming at school, the fears they have not told us about, the choices that will shape their years ahead. We bring them to you today with open hands, because we cannot hold them as tightly as we would like. Keep them safe in body and steady in spirit. Guard their hearts from cruelty, from shame, and from the lies this world tells young people about who they are.

Give them a hunger for you that does not fade when the season changes. Let them learn to pray the way they learn to breathe, without having to think about it. When they are tempted to be someone they are not, remind them whose they are. When they fail, and they will, let them run toward your forgiveness instead of hiding from it. Surround them with honest friends, wise teachers, and believers who will walk beside them. And where we have failed them, forgive us, and fill the gaps with your grace.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my child is in your hands right now, wherever they are. Watch over them today. Protect them from harm, guide their steps, and draw their heart close to yours. Help me trust you more than I trust my own ability to keep them safe. Thank you for loving them more than I ever could. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thanking God that your children are a gift from him, not a possession you must control. Let the words remind you that their lives belong to the One who made them.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God for wisdom in how you guide your children day by day. Pray for patience to teach them the way of faith in ordinary moments, not only in formal ones.

Isaiah 54:13

All your children will be taught by the LORD; and your children’s peace will be great.

(WEB)

Bring this promise before God on behalf of your children’s minds and hearts. Ask him to be their teacher, so that what they learn becomes a source of deep peace.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray these verses over your child’s comings and goings, asking God to keep them from evil every time they leave home and every time they return. Let this be a steady reminder that his watchfulness does not sleep.

3 John 1:4

I have no greater joy than this, to hear about my children walking in truth.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a longing for your children to walk in the truth. Ask God to deepen that joy in them and to let your own faith be an encouragement to them as well.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time that becomes your rhythm, such as the drive to school, the moment before breakfast, or the minutes after the lights go out at night. Keep a small note on the kitchen counter or in your phone with your children’s names, so you remember to pray for each one specifically. Speaking the names aloud, slowly, makes the prayer feel more personal and less like a list.

Invite your spouse, a grandparent, or a trusted friend to pray it with you, or to pray it for your children when you cannot. Many families find it helpful to hold hands while praying or to place a hand on a child’s shoulder when they are nearby. Ending each prayer by leaving the child in God’s care, rather than in your own worry, helps you rest in him.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your children and keep them. May he make his face shine on them and be gracious to them. May they grow in wisdom and in faith, and may they know, in every season, that they are deeply loved by the God who made them.
