This bedtime prayer for my grandchildren is written for the quiet end of the day, when the house settles and you want to bring your little ones before God before they drift off to sleep. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Either way, it gives you a clear way to hand over the day, ask for protection through the night, and thank God for the children in your care.

Bedtime Prayer for My Grandchildren

Father, thank you for the gift of these grandchildren. Thank you for the laughter they brought into this day, the questions they asked, and the small kindnesses they showed without even thinking about it. Now that the day is ending, I bring each of them to you. Calm their hearts and quiet their thoughts. Where there was worry, lighten it. Where there was a fight, a disappointment, or a hard word at school, heal what needs healing and remind them that you are near.

Watch over them while they sleep. Keep their bodies safe from harm, their dreams peaceful, and their rest deep and restoring. Guard their friendships, their schoolwork, and their growing faith. Help them know, even as they grow older and more independent, that they belong to you and that nothing can separate them from your love. Give their parents wisdom and strength, and surround this household with your peace tonight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, the day is done and my grandchildren are resting. Hold them close tonight. Keep them safe from every danger seen and unseen, quiet any fears, and let them wake refreshed. Thank you for their lives and for the joy they bring. Guard them until morning and draw them close to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this over your grandchildren as a reminder that rest is a gift God gives, and that they can lie down without fear because he is the one keeping watch over them.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Let this verse shape your prayer for the many worries that keep little minds awake. Ask God to give your grandchildren the sleep he provides to those he loves.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use these words to thank God that the one who watches over Israel never sleeps. Ask him to be the unseen guardian of your grandchildren through every dark hour.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

Speak this verse slowly as you picture your grandchildren held gently in God’s arms. Ask him to carry them tenderly, especially the ones who feel weary or small.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Pray this for grandchildren who carry tomorrow’s troubles into tonight. Ask Jesus to help them set down the future and trust him with the day ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as just after brushing teeth or once the lights go down, so the prayer becomes a familiar rhythm for the children. If you are in the room with them, you might rest a hand on a shoulder or a head while you pray. If you are apart, pray for them at their bedside in your own home, or call them and pray together by phone if their parents agree.

Invite the children to add their own requests once they are old enough to talk. Their thanks and worries often sound simpler and more honest than ours. You can also ask their parents to join you, so that the prayer is shared across the family and not left only to you.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless these children and keep them. May he make his face shine upon them and give them peace through the night. May they wake to a new morning knowing they are loved, held, and never forgotten by the God who made them.
