This prayer is for parents, grandparents, guardians and anyone who carries the children in their life on their heart. Pray it when you feel the weight of their future, when a school day has gone badly, when a child is struggling with a choice, or when you simply want to bring them before God in the quiet of the morning. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the spaces.

Prayer for Our Children

Father, we bring our children to You today. You knew each of them before they were born, and You know every hair on their heads and every thought they have not yet put into words. We do not always know what they need, but You do. Give them a sense of Your presence that goes with them to school, to practice, to friends’ houses and to the bedroom where they lie awake worrying. Guard their hearts from fear and their minds from lies about who they are.

Lord, teach them to love what is good and to walk away from what harms them. Where they are tempted to chase approval, remind them that they already belong to You. Where they feel small or overlooked, let them see that You notice them. Give them friends who speak life into them, teachers and coaches who are fair and kind, and a family that tells the truth in love. Let them grow in wisdom, in honesty and in tenderness toward others. Keep them safe in body, and keep their faith growing even when they cannot yet explain it.

And Lord, where we have failed them, we ask You to cover what we could not. Forgive our impatience, our distractions and the words we wish we could take back. Help us to be the kind of people who point them toward You more than toward ourselves. We trust them to Your care, because You love them more deeply than we ever could. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I hand my children to You again. Be with them where I cannot be, in every classroom, car and conversation. Guard their hearts, steady their fears and help them know they are loved. Let them grow in faith and kindness, and let me trust Your timing for who they are becoming. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

This verse calls children a gift from the Lord. When you pray it, thank God for each child by name and ask Him to help you receive them as the gift they are, even on the hard days.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

Read this as a prayer for your child’s path. Ask God to shape their heart early, and to draw them toward wisdom that will still guide them when they are grown.

Isaiah 54:13

All your children will be taught by the LORD; and your children’s peace will be great.

(WEB)

Pray this for your children’s learning and character. Ask the Lord to be their teacher, so that peace grows in them as they take in what is true and good.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your children are going out into the world. Ask God to send His angels to guard them on the road, at school and wherever they travel.

3 John 1:4

I have no greater joy than this, to hear about my children walking in truth.

(WEB)

This verse expresses the joy a faithful believer feels when children walk in the truth. Pray that your children would know that truth for themselves and that their lives would bring you joy.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment, such as the drive to school, the time after the kids are asleep, or a quiet cup of coffee before the house wakes up. Keep a copy of the prayer somewhere you will see it, perhaps tucked inside a kitchen cabinet or saved on your phone. Pray with your hands busy or open. Some parents write each child’s name on a slip of paper and place it on the table as they pray. Others touch a child’s bedroom doorframe or a photograph while they speak.

You do not have to pray it alone. Invite a spouse, a grandparent, a friend from church or a small group to pray the same words over the children. Let older children pray with you when they are willing, and encourage them to add their own petitions. Over time, these shared prayers become a family habit that children remember long after the details fade.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your children and keep them. May He make His face shine upon them and be gracious to them. May they grow strong in faith, gentle in spirit and sure of the love that will never leave them. May they carry Your light into every room they enter, and may the family who prays for them never stop being grateful for the gift they have been given.
