This bedtime prayer for our community is written for the close of the day, when you want to hand the streets, families, neighbors and needs around you into God’s keeping before you sleep. Pray it in the evening, once the lights are low and the day’s noise has settled. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the people you know by name.

Bedtime Prayer for Our Community

Lord, as this day comes to an end, we bring our community before you. You know the families lying awake tonight, the parents worried about money, the children who went to bed hungry or scared, and the older neighbors who live alone and may hear nothing but the clock. Be near to each of them. Let the ones who are grieving feel that they are not forgotten, and let the ones who are sick rest in your care.

We thank you for the ordinary gifts of this day: the kind word from a neighbor, the safe drive home, the meal shared at a crowded table, the work that was finished and the work that was not. Forgive us for the things we said that we should not have said, and for the ways we walked past someone who needed us. Teach us to be gentler tomorrow than we were today. Watch over the streets where we live, the schools and workplaces where we spend our hours, and the officers, nurses, drivers and shop workers who will be on duty while the rest of us sleep. Guard them and bring them home safely.

Now we give the night to you. Quiet our minds and loosen our grip on everything we could not fix today. Keep our homes safe, our doors locked against harm and our hearts open to peace. Let our community wake tomorrow stronger, kinder and more faithful than it went to sleep. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, before I sleep I ask you to watch over our community. Be with the families who are struggling, the lonely people who have no one to call, and those who are awake in pain or fear. Give them rest, protection and a sense of your nearness. Thank you for this day and its gifts. Let us wake to a new morning with hope. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the neighbors who lie awake worrying. Thank God that safety and rest do not depend on how well we manage the night, but on his keeping, and ask him to give that quiet confidence to anyone in our community who cannot sleep.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the weight of the day. Confess that our work and our worry cannot secure the city, the family or the home on their own, and ask the Lord to build and guard the places we love.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this for the people on night shifts, the caregivers and the emergency workers. Ask God to keep their feet steady and their watch faithful, and to remember that he does not grow tired while they serve.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Offer this verse for those who woke up this morning already tired or grieving. Thank God for his mercies that begin again each day, and ask him to renew hope in those who feel that yesterday’s pain has followed them into today.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this as a way to hand over the anxieties of the community one by one. Name the specific worries you know about, and ask for the peace that guards hearts and minds to settle over the people who are carrying them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this in the last few minutes before you turn off the lights, ideally sitting on the edge of your bed or kneeling beside it with your hands open in your lap. If you have a notebook nearby, write down the names of two or three neighbors, coworkers or local needs you saw in the news, and read them aloud at the point in the prayer where it speaks of the families and the lonely. Keeping a small list in one place helps you remember to pray for them again tomorrow.

If you share a home, invite a spouse, roommate or child to pray one part each, perhaps one reading the main prayer and another reading the verses. You can also pray it by phone with a friend across town, each of you holding the same community in mind at the same hour. Whether alone or together, end by turning off the light and letting the prayer be the last thing you say before sleep.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord, who neither slumbers nor sleeps, watch over your street and over every home within it tonight. May he give rest to the weary, comfort to the grieving and courage to those who must rise early. May his peace settle on you and on all who share this community, and may you wake to find his mercy new.
