This evening prayer for our family is for the close of the day, when the house grows quiet and the people you love are gathered under one roof or scattered across a few miles. Pray it at the dinner table after the dishes are done, at bedtime with the lights dimmed, or in the car on the way home. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words for the people in your home.

Evening Prayer for Our Family

Lord, thank you for this day and for every good thing in it. Thank you for the meals we shared, the laughter in the hallway, the homework finished, and the small kindnesses we gave and received. Forgive us for the words we said too quickly and the moments we were too tired to be patient. Cover those failures with your mercy, and let us go to sleep at peace with each other.

Watch over each person under this roof tonight. Be near the ones who lie awake with worry about school, work, money, or health, and give them rest that does not depend on having every answer. Guard the little ones through the dark hours, and give the older ones wisdom for what is coming tomorrow. Where there is grief or strain in our home, comfort us and draw us closer to one another.

Keep our going out and our coming in, our sleeping and our waking, in your care. Protect us from harm we can see and from dangers we cannot. Teach us to trust you with what we cannot control, and help us wake tomorrow ready to love well. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we give you this day and the night ahead. Thank you for each one of us. Forgive what we did wrong, calm what weighs on us, and keep every person in this home safe until morning. Let us rest in your presence and wake to your faithfulness. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over each member of your family as you turn out the lights. It names the peace that comes from God alone, and it gives your household permission to stop striving and sleep.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the pressure of work and worry at the end of the day. Ask God to give your family rest that comes from trusting him, not from getting everything done.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as a prayer of protection over your children and spouse. Thank God that the one who watches over Israel never sleeps and never looks away from your home.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Bring the day’s failures to God with this verse in mind. Ask him to make tomorrow new in your family’s life, because his mercies are renewed each morning.

Ephesians 4:26

“Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath…

(WEB)

Pray this before bed if there has been an argument or hard word in the house. Ask God to help everyone settle conflict honestly so that no anger carries over into the night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time each evening, such as after supper or just before bedtime, so the prayer becomes part of your family’s rhythm. Gather in the living room or around the kitchen table, and let younger children hold a blanket or a stuffed animal while the prayer is spoken. Going around the room so each person adds one thing they are thankful for can make the prayer feel shared rather than read to them.

If you are praying alone for your family, keep a hand on your Bible, a notebook, or the back of a chair where a child usually sits. Name each person by name as you pray, and let the physical gesture remind you that they are held in your thoughts. Invite a grandparent, a friend, or an older child to pray the closing line, so that the whole household learns to speak to God together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless each one in this home and keep them through the night. May he make his face shine upon them and give them peace that stays until morning. May the love you have shared today carry into tomorrow, and may every person here wake knowing they are known and cared for.
