This simple prayer for our leaders is written for anyone who wants to pray for the people entrusted with governing, whether a president, a governor, a mayor, a school board, or a church leader. You can pray it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and needs on your heart. It works well at the start of a day, during a news broadcast, or in a quiet moment when the weight of public life feels heavy.

Simple Prayer for Our Leaders

Lord, you are the one who sets up kings and removes them, and you know every person who carries responsibility in our nation and our community. We ask you to be near to our leaders today. Give them wisdom when decisions are complicated, and clear thinking when information is confusing or contradictory. Keep them from pride when they succeed and from despair when they fail. Protect their families from the strain that public life can bring.

We pray for honesty in those who speak for us and integrity in those who make the rules. Where there is corruption, expose it and bring it to an end. Where there is fear or division, bring peace and a willingness to listen to people who see things differently. Help our leaders remember that they answer to you, and that the people they serve are your people too. Give them courage to do what is right even when it is unpopular. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless and guide the leaders you have placed over us. Give them wisdom for the decisions in front of them, honesty in their words, and compassion for the people they serve. Guard their families and their hearts. Let justice and mercy meet in how they lead, and let us pray for them faithfully even when we disagree. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

How to Pray This Prayer

A good time to pray this is first thing in the morning, before the news and the noise of the day begin. Sit at your kitchen table with a cup of coffee in your hands, and read the prayer slowly. You might keep a list of current leaders on a card beside you so you can name them one by one. Praying with your hands open on your lap can help remind you that you are handing these people to God rather than carrying them yourself.

You can also pray this prayer with a spouse, a friend, or a small group. Taking turns reading sentences, or each adding one name, can turn a simple habit into a shared discipline. If you are a parent, you might pray it with your children at dinner, so they grow up knowing that praying for leaders is part of faithful citizenship.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord grant wisdom and integrity to every person who leads, and may he keep them steady under pressure. May he surround their families with peace and their work with justice. And may the one who prays for them, faithful and unafraid, be filled with the quiet confidence that God is still on the throne.
