This short morning prayer is for our nation, a few words you can pray as the day begins, before the news, the traffic and the inbox pull your attention in every direction. Read it aloud as it is written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart and your country’s needs lead you.
Short Morning Prayer for Our Nation
Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the gift of another day in this country. Before I open my phone or head out the door, I ask you to watch over the leaders who will make decisions today, the courts, the lawmakers, the officers and the public servants who keep our streets and our records in order. Give them wisdom they did not earn and humility they will not want to lose. Where they are tempted to put their own standing above the common good, turn their hearts back toward honesty and care for the people they serve.
I also pray for the people I will meet today, the neighbor who is struggling, the coworker who is anxious about money, the teacher, the nurse, the driver, the family in the next apartment. Let our nation be a place where people can disagree without contempt, where the vulnerable are protected, and where the stranger is treated with dignity. Heal the divisions that have hardened among us, and give me a patient and generous spirit in every conversation I have. Let me be a small part of the peace you are bringing to this land. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I thank you for this morning and for the country you have placed me in. Watch over our leaders and our neighbors today. Give wisdom to those who govern, justice to those who judge, and mercy to those who are hurting. Help me to speak kindly, act fairly and seek the good of others in everything I do. Make this land a place where your peace can be found. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
1 Timothy 2:1-2

(WEB)

Proverbs 14:34
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.
(WEB)
Proverbs says righteousness exalts a nation while sin is a reproach to any people. Pray that God would raise up righteousness in public life and in your own quiet choices, beginning with the ones you make today.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer at the start of your day, while the coffee is brewing or as you sit at the kitchen table before the house wakes up. If you keep a small notebook or a note on your phone, write down one name of a leader or one community need after you finish, so the prayer carries into the hours ahead. Some people find it helpful to pray with their hands open on the table or folded in their lap, a simple sign of letting go.
You might also share this prayer with a spouse, a roommate, a friend or your small group, and pray it together over breakfast or on a short phone call. Praying for a nation is easier when others are praying alongside you. Let each person add one sentence about a need they see close to home, and the words will grow into a shared intercession for the country you live in.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into this day and keep watch over your steps. May he give you grace for the people you meet and courage for the work ahead. May the peace of God guard your heart and guard this nation, and may his goodness be seen in the ordinary faithfulness of your hands today.
