This evening prayer is for the end of a day spent caring for, worrying about, or simply thinking of an aging mother or father. It is meant for the late hours, when the house is quiet, the medications are sorted, and the day’s small crises have settled. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Evening Prayer for an Elderly Parent

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring You my mother (or father) and everything I carried for them today. Thank You for the hours of strength You gave me, for the patience I did not have to manufacture on my own, and for the moments of laughter or quiet we shared. Forgive me for the words I wish I had chosen differently and for the times I felt short on grace. Take those too.

Tonight I release the worries that keep returning: the stairs, the falls, the appointments, the bills, the memory that slips a little more each week. I cannot hold all of it, and I do not have to. Watch over my parent while they sleep. Ease their pain, settle their breathing, and give them rest that is deep and unafraid. Guard their heart against loneliness in the dark hours.

Give me rest as well. Let my body unclench and my mind stop rehearsing tomorrow. Surround our home with Your peace, and wake us both to a morning of Your mercy, where Your faithfulness is new again. Thank You that You never grow weary of us, and never tire of listening. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and my parent is on my mind tonight. Thank You for being with us today. Hold them safely through the night, ease whatever hurts, and quiet the fears that keep me awake. Take what I could not carry and give us both rest in Your care. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly before you close your eyes. It turns the prayer toward the simple trust that sleep itself is a gift, and that safety does not depend on your vigilance alone.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Pray this for your parent by name, and let the image of a keeper who never sleeps steady you. The watchfulness you feel is shared with a Guardian who does not tire.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring the weight of caregiving to the words of Jesus here. Name the things that feel heavy tonight and ask Him to exchange them for the rest He offers.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Use this when you feel spent. Ask God to give strength to the weary, and let it remind you that your own reserves were never meant to be enough.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Thank God for His mercies being renewed each morning, and ask that tomorrow bring a fresh measure of compassion for both you and your parent.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this near the end of the evening, once the lights are low and any medicines or meals are done. A chair beside your parent’s bed, or a seat at the kitchen table after they have gone to their room, works well. Holding a cup of tea or resting a hand on their blanket can keep your attention on the people in front of you rather than your phone or the list still running in your head.

If you share the care with a sibling, spouse, or friend, invite them to pray it with you by phone or in person, taking a line each. If you are alone, read it once aloud and then once silently. Your parent may also be able to join you with a few words of their own, even if their memory is fading, since familiar prayers often stay with people longer than recent conversation.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep your parent in His care tonight and give them peaceful sleep. May He keep you too, and let you wake tomorrow with strength enough for the day ahead. May His face shine on your home and His peace settle over every room until morning comes.
