This morning prayer for protection asks God to guard you, your household and everyone you will meet today before the first demand of the day arrives. Pray it when you first wake, while the house is quiet, or in the car before you walk into work. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the same request.
Morning Prayer for Protection
Lord, I wake up this morning knowing that I cannot see what this day holds. I do not know which conversation will turn hard, which drive will be dangerous, or which news will land on my heart. So I come to You first, before my phone, before my inbox, before the noise starts. Surround me with Your presence today. Stand between me and the harm I can see and the harm I cannot.
Guard the people I love. Be with my children on the way to school and in the classroom, and with my spouse as they head out to their work. Keep the people who depend on me safe in body, mind and spirit. Protect the house I am leaving behind, and the hands that will be doing ordinary tasks today. Watch over the people I will meet, the strangers and the friends, so that I may treat them with the care You would want.
Shield me from my own weakness as well. Give me patience when I am tired, honesty when I am tempted to hide, and self-control when my temper rises. Where fear tries to take the first place in my heart, remind me that You are already present in every room I will enter. Thank You that I can rest in Your keeping. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am starting this day in Your hands. Cover me and the people I love, and guard the places I will go. Keep fear from steering my choices and let Your peace settle my thoughts. Protect my body, my mind and my heart as I move through the hours ahead. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 121:7-8
7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.
(WEB)
Pray this as a reminder that God’s watch over you is continuous, not just during the night hours. Ask Him to keep your going out and your coming in as you move through each part of the day ahead.
Psalm 91:11
For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.
(WEB)
Use this verse to name the specific places you are heading, such as the road, the office, the store or the school. Ask God to send His angels to guard your steps wherever you need them most today.
Proverbs 18:10
The LORD’s name is a strong tower: the righteous run to him, and are safe.
(WEB)
Pray this when you feel exposed or unsure of how the day will unfold. Ask God to be your place of safety, and speak His name as the refuge you run to before you run anywhere else.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and let each promise become a request. Ask God to strengthen you for whatever difficulty meets you and to hold you steady when your own strength runs thin.
Psalm 3:5
I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.
(WEB)
Pray this when sleep has left you anxious about the day. Thank God that you woke to find Him faithful, and ask Him to sustain you through the hours that stretch ahead.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer before you pick up your phone or check the news, while the house is still quiet. If you have a cup of coffee or tea in your hands, let the warmth remind you of God’s nearness as you speak. Keep the words short and sincere, and pause after each request to let it settle before moving to the next.
You can also pray it with someone else. A spouse, a roommate or a friend can join you at the breakfast table or on a phone call, taking turns naming the people and places they are concerned about. When you finish, you may want to write down one specific concern to carry with you through the day, so the prayer continues quietly in your mind.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you, behind you and beside you today. May He keep you in every step, guard those you love, and give you peace that holds steady through every hour. Go in His strength and rest in His care.
