This is a Christian prayer for overcoming temptation, written for the moments when a habit, a thought, or a pull toward something you already know is harmful feels stronger than your resolve. You can pray it at the start of the day, in the car before a difficult situation, or in the middle of the night when the urge is loudest. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Christian Prayer for Overcoming Temptation

Father, you know what pulls at me. You know the late-night scrolling, the anger I swallow and then let out on the people closest to me, the lie that would be easier to tell than the truth, and the old habit I keep telling myself I can manage alone. I am tired of losing the same battle. I confess that I often walk toward temptation with my eyes half closed, believing I am stronger than I am.

Lord, I ask for a way out in the moment of testing. Show me the exit before I need it, and give me the courage to take it even when it feels awkward or costly. Put people in my life who will ask me hard questions and pray with me honestly. Where I have made room for sin, cut it back. Where I have been hiding, bring me into the light. Strengthen the places in me that are weak, and remind me that you are faithful and will not let me be pushed beyond what I can bear. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I feel the pull right now, and I do not want to follow it. Give me the next right step and the strength to take it. Turn my attention to you, and help me stay with what is good and true for this one minute, then the next. Keep me close to you and out of the place where this temptation has its grip. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a promise you are holding God to. Thank him that the temptation you face is not unusual, and ask him to show you the way of escape he has already prepared.

James 4:7

Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the two movements it describes: submitting to God and resisting the devil. Pray that you would turn toward God first, so that resisting becomes possible rather than merely exhausting.

Psalm 119:11

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

(WEB)

Ask God to write his word on your heart so that when the pull comes, a verse or a truth is already there to answer it. Pray that memory and love for Scripture would grow in you over time.

Galatians 5:16

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a request to walk by the Spirit. Ask for the Spirit’s leading in ordinary choices, so that the desires of the flesh lose their hold on you one decision at a time.

Matthew 26:41

Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

(WEB)

Let this verse shape your honesty about weakness. Pray that you would stay watchful and prayerful, and that you would not assume your spirit is stronger than your body or your habits.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pick a fixed time each day to pray this prayer, such as when you wake up or before you start work, so that you are asking for help before the temptation arrives. Keep a small reminder nearby, like a note on your phone or a verse card in your wallet. When the urge rises, pause, put your hands on something solid like the edge of the table or your own knee, and pray the shorter version out loud.

Consider asking a trusted friend, spouse, or pastor to pray this prayer with you, or to pray for you on the days you feel most vulnerable. Accountability tends to work best when it is specific and kind, so tell them plainly what you are struggling with and ask them to check in with you by name. Shared prayer keeps the battle from being fought in secret.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over his people keep watch over you today. May he open the way out when you cannot see one, steady your steps when the ground feels unsure, and fill your heart with a love that is stronger than the pull you feel. May you rest in his faithfulness and walk in his freedom.
