This evening prayer for peace at work is for the end of a working day, when the inbox is still open in your mind, a conversation keeps replaying, and you want to hand the day back to God before you sleep. You can pray it aloud as written, pray it silently while you sit in the car or at the kitchen table, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Either way, it is a way to close the day in God’s hands.
Evening Prayer for Peace at Work
Father, the day is ending, and I bring you the work that filled it. I think of the meetings that ran long, the email I wished I had worded differently, and the deadline that is still waiting for me tomorrow. Some of what I carried today was mine to carry, and some of it was never mine at all. Show me which is which. Loosen the knot in my shoulders and the tightness in my chest, and let me stop rehearsing what I should have said.
Thank you for the people I work with, even the difficult ones. Thank you for the paycheck, the skills you have given me, and the small kindnesses that came my way today. Where I failed, forgive me, and give me the humility to make things right tomorrow. Where I was wronged, I ask you to heal what hurts and to keep me from carrying bitterness home. Guard my mind through the night so that it does not keep running the same arguments.
Watch over my coworkers and my boss tonight, the ones I know and the ones I only see from a distance. Give them rest, and give them peace in their own homes. Keep tomorrow’s work in your hands, and when I wake, give me clear thinking, patient words, and courage for whatever I face. I rest in you now. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am done for today. I give you the tasks I did not finish, the words I wish I had chosen differently, and the people who wore me out. Take the weight of work off my mind and let me sleep. Protect my home and my family tonight, and keep me in your peace until morning. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this verse as you lie down, naming the work that is still on your mind. Ask God to be the one who keeps you safe while you sleep, so that you can let go of the need to watch every outcome.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Use this passage to bring each worry from the day to God in turn. Paul links prayer with peace, so after you name a concern, pause and ask God for the calm that guards your heart.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Read this slowly and picture yourself setting down a heavy bag. Tell Jesus which parts of your job have been exhausting you, and ask him to show you what rest looks like tonight.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
This verse reminds you that your work matters but does not hold up the world. Pray it as a release, thanking God that he gives sleep to those he loves, and trusting him with what remains undone.
1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
(WEB)
Pray this verse by naming each anxiety that came up at the office, one by one. Each time you name one, hand it to God, knowing that he cares for you more than you can measure.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer at the end of your workday, before you start dinner or as soon as you get into bed. A good spot is a chair away from screens, or the car in your driveway before you walk inside. Keep a notepad nearby so that when a task pops into your head, you can write it down and pray over it, rather than trying to hold it in your mind all night.
Your hands can help too. Hold a cup of tea, rest a palm on your chest, or open them palm-up on your lap as you pray, as a sign that you are setting the day down. If someone in your household also works, invite them to pray it with you or to add a sentence of their own. Many people find that praying with a spouse or friend makes it easier to leave work at the door.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over his people keep watch over you tonight. May the work of your hands rest in his care, and may your mind be quieted by his faithfulness. Let peace settle over your home, and may you wake refreshed and ready for the day he gives.
