This bedtime prayer for our children is for parents, grandparents and caregivers who want to end the day by placing their kids in God’s hands. Pray it in the last few minutes before lights go out, either reading it aloud as written or using it as a starting point and speaking from your own heart in the same spirit.
Bedtime Prayer for Our Children
Father, the day is closing and our children are winding down. Thank You for the ordinary good things we saw today: the laughter at breakfast, the scraped knee that healed, the friend who shared a snack, the small moment when one of them said thank you without being reminded. Quiet our hearts as we turn toward sleep, and quiet theirs too. Where there was impatience or tears or a word said too sharply, forgive us, and help us start fresh in the morning.
Watch over their rest tonight. Guard them from fear of the dark, from bad dreams, and from anything that would steal their peace. Be near to the one who has a hard test waiting tomorrow, the one who felt left out at school, and the one who is still learning to trust that they are loved. Let them know, even without words, that You are close and that nothing has escaped Your notice. Keep their bodies strong and their minds unhurried as they sleep.
Lord, we give them to You, not because they are ours to keep safe on our own, but because they have always been Yours first. Shape their hearts as they grow. Give them wisdom for the choices ahead and courage for the things that frighten them. And when we are tired and unsure we are doing this well, remind us that You are a faithful Father to them. Thank You for tonight and for the mercy that will meet us in the morning. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, our children are going to sleep now. Thank You for this day and for every small gift in it. Keep them safe through the night, calm their worries, and let them wake refreshed and glad. Be with them when we cannot be, and let them rest in knowing You are near. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this over your children as a declaration of trust. Ask God to let them lie down and sleep without the weight of fear, knowing that safety comes from Him and not from their own vigilance.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Use this verse to release your own anxiety about rest. Thank God that He gives sleep to those He loves, and ask Him to help you rest as well so your children see that trust in action.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
(WEB)
Pray this while picturing the night as a long watch. Ask God to keep awake over your children while they sleep, since He never slumbers and never loses track of them.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.
(WEB)
Bring this verse to the child who wrestles with worry at bedtime. Ask God to fix their thoughts on Him so that their minds can settle into peace instead of spinning through the day.
Matthew 6:34
Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.
(WEB)
Pray this for children carrying tomorrow’s problems tonight. Ask Jesus to help them set down what they cannot control and trust that each day brings its own sufficient grace.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer after the last story, the last drink of water and the final hug, when the room has gone quiet. Sit on the edge of the bed or stand in the doorway with one hand resting lightly on a child’s back or on the blanket. Keeping a hand on them while you speak gives the prayer a physical sense of blessing that children can feel, even when they are half asleep.
If you have more than one child, you can pray the same words over them together or name each child in turn and add a line about what that child is facing this week. A spouse, grandparent or older sibling can take a verse each and read it aloud. Praying together also reminds everyone in the house that they are part of the same family under God’s care.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless our children and keep them through the night. May He make His face shine on them and give them a deep and peaceful sleep. May they wake in the morning knowing they are loved, held and never alone.
