This is a Christian prayer for rest and renewal, written for the days when you are running on empty and need God to restore what busyness, worry or grief has drained from you. Pray it in the morning before the day begins, in the evening when you are ready to put it down, or whenever exhaustion catches up with you. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Christian Prayer for Rest and Renewal

Lord, I come to you tired. My mind has been going since I woke up, and my body feels heavier than it should. I have been carrying my work, my family, the bills, and the things I keep worrying about at three in the morning, and I know I was never meant to carry all of it alone. Thank you that you do not grow weary and you do not sleep on the job. Teach me to stop striving for a moment and simply be with you.

Restore what has been worn down in me. Quiet the list that runs through my head, and slow my breathing until it matches the pace of your peace. Where I have been short with the people I love, forgive me, and give me patience for the next conversation. Renew my strength so that I can do the next small thing well, without pretending I am stronger than I am. Show me where I have been resting in the wrong places, in distraction or in my own control, and draw me back to you.

Give me rest that goes deeper than sleep. Let me trust that you are working even when I cannot see the results, and let my hands open so that I can set down what is not mine to hold. Fill me with fresh hope and steady courage for whatever comes next. Thank you for your faithfulness, and for the gift of a new day. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out, and I need you right now. Slow my thoughts and steady my breath. Take what I cannot carry today, and give me the rest and strength that only you can give. Renew my heart so I can face the next hour with peace. Thank you that you are with me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks this invitation to people who are exhausted and burdened. Pray it slowly, naming the specific weight you are carrying, and let the word rest be an invitation you accept rather than a goal you have to earn.

Psalm 23:1-3

1 The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

(WEB)

David pictures God as a shepherd who leads sheep to green pasture and still water. As you pray this, picture yourself being led, not driven, and ask God to restore your soul the way a good shepherd restores a weary animal.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah reminds us that God gives strength to the weary and that waiting on him brings renewal. Pray this when you feel you have nothing left, and ask God to lift you up the way he promises in this passage.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

This verse calls us to stop and know that God is God. Use it to pause your racing thoughts, breathing slowly as you let the words settle, and let your restlessness give way to trust.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

In the middle of a painful book, the writer remembers that God’s mercies are renewed every morning. Pray this as you begin your day, thanking God for fresh mercy and asking him to help you receive it.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet place where you will not be interrupted for a few minutes, even if that is the car before you walk into the office or a chair by the window before the house wakes up. Sit with an open posture, and if your hands feel restless, hold a cup of tea or rest your palms on your knees. Read the prayer once slowly, then read it again and pause at any line that catches you, speaking more about it to God in your own words.

If you are praying for someone else who is exhausted, such as a parent, a friend or a coworker, change the first-person words to “them” and “they,” or pray it together with that person. A spouse, a small group or a trusted friend can also pray it over you on a hard week, which is often exactly when we need others to carry the words for us.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you rest that reaches the places sleep cannot touch. May his peace guard your thoughts, and may his strength meet you in each ordinary hour. Go gently today, knowing you are held by the one who never tires.
