This night prayer is for the moment when the day is finally over and your mind will not settle. It is written for rest and renewal, for handing the day’s worries, failures and unfinished tasks to God so you can sleep and wake up with fresh strength. Pray it at bedtime, sitting on the edge of your bed or lying down with the lights off, and read it aloud as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.

Night Prayer for Rest and Renewal

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and I thank you for those moments. Some of it went badly: the words I wish I had not said, the work that did not get finished, the worry about money, my health, or the people I love who are struggling. I set all of it down here. You are not surprised by any of it, and you are not tired of hearing from me.

Quiet my thoughts now. When my mind starts replaying conversations or planning tomorrow before it has even started, slow it down. Let my body relax after the long hours, my shoulders loosen, my breathing grow steady. Guard my sleep through the night, and keep watch over my home, my family and anyone who is awake in pain or fear right now. Renew what the day has used up, so that I wake with clearer eyes and a kinder heart. I trust you with the hours I cannot see. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out, and I am ready to rest. Take what I could not carry today and hold it for me. Settle my mind, steady my breathing, and let me sleep without fear. Watch over the people I love and the ones who cannot sleep tonight. Give me strength for the morning, and remind me that I do not have to earn your care. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a simple statement of trust that you can lie down and sleep because God keeps watch. Pray it slowly as you lie down, letting the words replace the list of worries that keeps you awake.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse says that God gives sleep to those he loves, which means rest is a gift and not a failure. Use it when you feel guilty for stopping work, and receive the sleep you are about to get as something given.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

The psalmist woke in the night in danger and found he could sleep because the Lord sustained him. Pray this verse over the fears that tend to rise after dark, naming them one by one and handing each to God.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites weary people to come to him for rest, and he does not wait for them to be finished first. Bring your exhaustion to him as it is, and let this invitation shape the last words you speak before sleep.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These verses speak of God’s mercies being new every morning, which is exactly what renewal means. Pray them as a promise for tomorrow, trusting that the mercy you could not feel today will meet you at sunrise.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time each night, perhaps right after you turn off the screens or after you brush your teeth, so the prayer becomes a signal to your body that the day is over. A bedroom with the lamp off and the door closed works well. Try holding something in your hands while you pray, such as a folded blanket, a smooth stone or your own wrist, so your attention has somewhere to rest besides your thoughts.

If you share a home, you can pray this prayer together with a spouse, a child or a roommate, taking turns to read a paragraph each. It also works well on the phone during a sleepless night, read slowly from the screen with the brightness turned all the way down. Do not worry if you fall asleep halfway through. The prayer has already done its work by then.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight, and may you lie down in peace and rise in strength. May your worries grow quiet in his presence, and may you wake to find his mercies new, as they always are.
