This short prayer for rest and renewal is for the moments when you feel depleted, when your days run together and your mind will not slow down. You can pray it in the early morning before the house wakes, during a lunch break, or at night when you finally sit still. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where something rings truer for you.

Short Prayer for Rest and Renewal

Lord, I come to you tired. My body is heavy, and my mind keeps returning to the list of things I have not finished. Some of it is work, some of it is family, and some of it is the quiet worry I do not always name. I confess that I have been trying to carry all of it on my own, as if the weight were mine to hold alone.

Teach me to rest in you. Slow my breathing and quiet the noise in my head. Restore what has been drained from me, my patience, my kindness, and my hope. Where I have been running on empty, fill me again with the strength that comes from you and not from my own effort. Give me a rest that reaches down into my soul, not just a break from my schedule.

Renew me, Father, one day at a time. Help me to receive your grace without guilt, and to let go of what you have not asked me to carry. I trust that you see my weariness and that you are not impatient with me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and I need you. Slow me down, quiet my thoughts, and give me rest that only you can give. Renew my strength and my heart for the next hour, and help me trust that I do not have to carry everything alone. Thank you that you are near. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks this invitation to people who are weary and burdened. Pray it slowly, naming the specific load you are carrying, and then hear him repeat that the rest is offered to you.

Psalm 23:2

He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.

(WEB)

This verse pictures the Shepherd leading his sheep to quiet waters and green pasture. Pray it by asking him to lead you to the places of rest your body and spirit need today.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah promises that those who wait on the Lord will find their strength renewed. Pray this as a statement of waiting, letting go of your own striving so that his strength can come.

Psalm 62:1

My soul rests in God alone. My salvation is from him.

(WEB)

The psalmist returns to God as the source of quiet and rest. Pray it by sitting in silence for a moment and telling God that you are waiting on him alone.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These verses remind us that God’s mercies are new every morning. Pray them at the start of your day, asking him to give you fresh compassion for yourself and for others.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can pause for a few minutes without rushing. Many people find the early morning or the moment before sleep works best, but a parked car at lunch or a quiet corner of the kitchen can serve just as well. Sit or kneel with your feet on the floor, and let your hands rest open on your lap, which can help the body settle while the words are spoken.

You might pray this with a spouse, a friend, or a small group who are also running low. Read a verse aloud, then pray the longer prayer together, taking turns with a sentence each. Afterward, ask one another what rest looks like for each person this week, and agree to pray for that specific need.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gives rest to the weary meet you where you are today. May he steady your breath, lighten the load you were never meant to carry, and fill you with a quiet strength that will last beyond this moment. May you walk forward knowing that you are loved and held.
