This night prayer for safe travels is written for the end of a journey, or the night before one, when you want to hand the road, the vehicle, the people with you and the miles ahead into God’s keeping. Pray it at bedtime in a hotel room, a friend’s spare bed, or your own home before a trip begins. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your concerns are different.

Night Prayer for Safe Travels

Lord, thank You for bringing us safely through this day. Thank You for the roads we drove, the planes and trains that carried us, the hands that steered and the eyes that watched the traffic. We know that any journey can turn in a moment, and tonight we place every mile behind us and every mile ahead into Your care. Guard the people who were with us, and the ones still traveling tonight, whether by road, rail, sea or air.

We bring You the tiredness in our bodies and the worries that follow us into sleep. Settle our minds so that we are not replaying near misses or rehearsing tomorrow’s route. Watch over the vehicle we rely on, the tires, the brakes and the fuel, and over the strangers on the highway whose names we will never know. Keep us alert when we need to be, and give us rest now that we can truly sleep.

Thank You that You do not sleep or slumber, and that You keep watch over us through the dark hours. We rest in that promise tonight. Keep us safe until we arrive, and bring us home to the people who are waiting for us. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, thank You for this day and for getting us this far. Keep the road safe under us and the people we love safe beside us. Watch over every driver, pilot and traveler still moving tonight. Calm our hearts and give us sleep, and bring us home when the journey is finished. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and turn the promise into a request: that God would guard your going out and your coming in, for the trip behind you and the one ahead. It is a useful verse to pray at the end of a long day on the road.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse speaks directly to sleep. Pray it over yourself and anyone traveling with you, asking God to let you lie down and rest because He is the one who keeps you safe in the night.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask for God’s angels, or simply His protective care, over those in transit. Name the modes of travel you are concerned about, asking Him to keep each one in His charge.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

When you are weary from a long drive or a delayed flight, pray this verse for strength. Ask God to renew your energy for the remaining miles and to give you steadiness for the drive or the wait still ahead.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this for the route itself, the choices about turns, timing and stops. Ask God to direct your path, especially where you are unsure of the way or of the decisions still to be made.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it at the end of the day, once the bags are unpacked or the seatbelts are off, and before you turn out the light. Sit or kneel somewhere quiet, and if you can, put your hand on the bag, the car keys or the boarding pass as a physical reminder of the journey you are giving to God. Speak the words slowly, pausing after each request so that you actually pray it rather than rush through it.

If you are traveling with others, invite them to pray it with you, each person adding a line about the road or the vehicle they are most concerned about. A family or a small group can take turns reading the paragraphs aloud. Ask someone at home to pray it for you on the night you are on the road, and let them know which trip and which people to remember.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you on every road and keep watch over you through the night. May He guard your going out and your coming in, and bring you home rested, whole and grateful. May you sleep in peace, knowing you are held.
