This is a Christian prayer for the journey ahead, whether that journey is a move to a new city, a season of change at work, a long drive, a hard medical road, or a new chapter you have not yet learned how to walk. Pray it before you leave, when you wake up facing a day of uncertainty, or whenever the road ahead feels longer than your strength. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own names and worries into the blanks.

Christian Prayer for the Journey Ahead

Lord, you have walked every road I am about to walk, and you already know the turns I cannot see yet. I bring you the parts of this journey that make my stomach tighten: the unknowns, the decisions I have to make without enough information, and the people who depend on me to get it right. Go before me into each of those places. Clear the path where you can, and steady my feet where you cannot.

Where I am tired, give me rest that does not depend on the outcome. Where I am afraid, remind me that you are not surprised by anything that will happen today or next year. Keep me honest on the hard days, patient on the slow ones, and grateful for the small mercies that show up along the way. When I want to rush ahead or turn back, hold me in the middle. Let me trust that you are faithful to the person I am becoming as well as the place I am going. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am heading into something I cannot control. Walk with me in it. Give me the next right step and the strength to take it, and keep my heart steady when the road bends. Help me to notice your presence in ordinary moments, and to trust you with what I cannot see. Thank you for going ahead of me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific comings and goings in your week, the drives, the flights, the first days and the late nights. Ask the Lord to keep watch over each of them, and let the promise settle your anxiety about what might go wrong.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When you are tempted to map out every detail yourself, pray these words slowly. Ask God to help you lean on his understanding rather than your own, and to show you where your plans need to open up to his direction.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the rivers and fires we did not choose. Pray it for the hardest stretch ahead, asking God to be with you in the water and the heat, not only on the far shore.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Joshua was about to lead a people into unknown land. Pray this command over your own courage, asking God to make you strong and steady where fear would otherwise take over.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring each worry about the road ahead into prayer, one by one, with thanksgiving alongside your requests. Ask God to guard your heart and mind with a peace that makes no sense from the outside.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a moment that is already part of your routine, such as the car before you turn the key, the kitchen table with your first cup of coffee, or the bench by the gate before a flight. Keep a pen nearby and write one or two specific concerns in the margin, so the prayer lands on real things and not vague ones. Many people find it helpful to hold something in their hands, a ring, a set of keys, or a folded note, as a physical reminder that they have handed the journey over.

Consider inviting someone else to pray it with you or over you. A spouse, a close friend, or a small group can read it aloud while you listen, and then speak the blessing below over you as you set out. Come back to the prayer at the end of each stage of the journey, and notice how God has been faithful along the way.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you on every mile of the road ahead. May he keep your going out and your coming in, guard your heart when the way is unclear, and give you peace that holds steady until you arrive where he is leading you.
