This bedtime prayer is for anyone who lies down at night with a mind full of what-ifs, unfinished conversations and tomorrow’s list. It is meant to be prayed in the last few minutes before sleep, either read aloud exactly as written or used as a starting point for your own words. Pray it as slowly as you need to, and feel free to change any line so it sounds like the way you actually talk to God.
Bedtime Prayer for the Worried
Father, the day is ending, and I am bringing you what I have carried through it. I am tired of replaying the phone call that went badly and the bills I cannot stop adding up in my head. I keep rehearsing conversations that have not happened and outcomes I cannot control. I know you see every worry I have not put into words, and I ask you to take them now, one by one, so I am not holding them all at once.
Quiet my thoughts and slow my breathing. Where my body is still tense, let it soften. Where my mind keeps running toward tomorrow, bring me back to tonight and to the bed I am lying in. Remind me that you were awake before the sun came up and that you will be awake through the hours I am asleep. Watch over my family while I rest, and keep the people I love close to you.
Thank you for the good things from this day, even the small ones: a warm meal, a moment of laughter, a stranger who was kind. Help me trust you with what I cannot fix tonight, and give me enough peace to close my eyes. I give you the worry, and I receive your rest. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am anxious and I do not want to carry this into the night. I hand you the thing I keep circling back to and the fear that comes with it. Hold me while I sleep, keep watch over the people I love, and let me wake up tomorrow with the strength I will need. I trust you with what is still unfinished. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Read this slowly as you lie down. Pray that God would be the one who makes you safe, so that you can let go of the work of keeping yourself awake to guard against every danger.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Let this verse remind you that rest is a gift from God and not something you have to earn. Ask him to forgive the habit of working through the night in your mind and to teach you to lay the day down.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Use this passage to bring each specific worry to God by name. Ask that the peace he gives would guard your heart and thoughts where your own reasoning has failed you.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Take this invitation personally and pray it back to Jesus. Name the weight you are carrying tonight and ask him to receive it so you can finally stop trying to hold it alone.
1 Peter 5:7
Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.
(WEB)
Read this as an instruction you can actually follow. Pray that you would cast each anxiety onto God in plain words, trusting that he cares for you more than your worry can measure.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a set time each night, such as after you have brushed your teeth or once the lights are off, so the prayer becomes a steady habit and not a last resort. Keep a notebook or a sticky note on the nightstand, and as you pray, write down the one or two worries that are loudest. Closing the page afterward gives your hands something to do and signals to your mind that the day’s list is finished.
If you share a home with a spouse, child or roommate who also struggles to sleep, pray the prayer aloud together or take turns reading the lines. Anyone who is awake in your house can also pray it for you from another room. Being prayed for by someone you trust can loosen the grip of fear more gently than trying to quiet it alone.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who never sleeps keep watch over you tonight. May his peace settle over your thoughts like a blanket, and may the worries you have handed to him stay with him until morning. Rest well, and wake to find that his faithfulness has held you through the dark.
