This simple prayer for the year ahead is for the start of a new year, a birthday, a new season of work or study, or any morning when you feel the calendar stretching out in front of you. Pray it slowly at the beginning of January, on the first morning of a new job, or whenever you want to hand the coming months to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for the Year Ahead

Lord, I don’t know what this year will hold. I can see the calendar, the bills, the appointments and the people I love, but I can’t see what’s around the next corner. Some of what I’m carrying feels heavy already: the worry about money, the tiredness in my body, the question of whether I’m making the right choices for my family. Please meet me in those places before I try to solve them alone.

Father, I ask you to go before me into every month. Give me wisdom for the decisions I have to make, and patience with the people who test mine. Guard my heart from anxiety when the news is hard, and help me notice the small mercies you place along the way, like a kind word from a friend or a good night’s sleep. Where I have been trying to control everything, loosen my grip and remind me that you are already faithful to me.

I give you this year as it is, with its unknowns and its ordinary days. Walk with me through the good seasons and the hard ones, and let me become more loving, more honest and more trusting of you by the time it ends. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you know the year I’m about to walk into. Go before me into each week, give me wisdom for what I must decide, and steady my heart when I feel afraid. Show me where you are working, and let me trust you with what I cannot see. Thank you that I don’t face this year alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel tempted to rely only on your own plans. Ask God to help you lean on his understanding and to show you the paths he is already opening for the months ahead.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when the year feels uncertain. Thank God that his mercies are new each morning, and ask him to give you fresh grace for today rather than all of next year at once.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this when fear starts to crowd your thoughts about the future. Let God’s promise of his presence and strength become the words you return to whenever worry rises.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Pray this as you look at the calendar and feel the weight of time. Ask God to teach you to number your days well, so that the year is spent on what matters most to him.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring this to God whenever you catch yourself planning and worrying at the same time. Let each anxious thought become a request, and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer early in the morning, before the phone and the inbox take over. Sit at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee or tea, or find a quiet chair near a window. Keep a pen nearby and, as you finish, write down one specific worry you are handing over and one hope you are asking God to grow.

You might also pray it with someone else, such as a spouse, a close friend or a small group. Read it together, and let each person add one line of their own concern for the year. Ending by praying for one another makes the prayer a shared commitment rather than a private wish.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every month of this year. May he give you wisdom for each choice, peace in each worry and joy in each small gift. May you know, on the hardest days, that you are held by a God who has never once let go of his people. Amen.
