This is an evening prayer for my marriage, written to be prayed at the end of the day when you and your spouse are tired, the dishes are done, and the house has gone quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. It is meant to help you release the friction of the day, ask God to guard your home through the night, and thank Him for the person beside you.

Evening Prayer for My Marriage

Lord, thank You for the day that is ending. Thank You for the moments of kindness and for the grace that covered the places where I was short or sharp. I bring my marriage to You now, the good and the hard parts of it. Where I spoke too quickly tonight, forgive me, and where my spouse was hurt by my words or my silence, heal what I caused. Soften my heart toward them, and give me the courage to say what needs saying tomorrow instead of holding it in tonight.

Father, I ask You to protect our home while we sleep. Guard our bodies, our minds, and our rest. Quiet the worries that circle in the dark, the money questions, the fears about our children, the things we have not yet figured out. Where we have drifted apart without meaning to, draw us back together. Remind us why we chose each other and help us remember the small, faithful ways we have loved one another over the years. Let our marriage be a place of safety, not competition. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank You for my spouse and for this day we have shared. Forgive me where I have failed them tonight, and help me to make things right in the morning. Guard our home and our hearts while we rest. Where we are weary, refresh us. Where we are distant, draw us close again. Keep our marriage in Your care through the night, and wake us to love one another well. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, trusting that the Lord keeps watch over your home even when you cannot see what He is doing. It is a good reminder that rest is a gift and not something you must earn by solving every problem first.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Use this verse to admit that your marriage cannot be held together by your effort alone. Ask the Lord to build the household, so that you can lay down the pressure to fix everything yourself.

Ephesians 4:26-27

26 “Be angry, and don’t sin.” Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 and don’t give place to the devil.

(WEB)

Pray this passage honestly about anger and the end of the day. Ask God to help you deal with conflict before the sun goes down, so that unresolved tension does not settle into your sleep.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let each quality become a request. Ask the Lord to grow patience, kindness, and a willingness not to keep a record of wrongs in your marriage, starting with how you treated your spouse today.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the places where hurt has lingered. Ask God to help you forgive as you have been forgiven, and to show you whether any old wound is still being carried into your evenings together.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, perhaps just before you turn out the bedroom light, so that the prayer becomes a steady rhythm rather than something you remember only after a bad day. If you can, sit or kneel side by side, or hold hands while one of you reads aloud. Keep a small notebook on the nightstand to jot down any concern you want to bring back to God in the morning.

If your spouse is willing, invite them to pray a line or two of their own before you finish. If they are not ready, you can still pray for them quietly, using their name, while they sleep in the same room. Praying for your marriage while your spouse is not yet part of it can still change the way you speak to them the next day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over His people keep watch over this marriage tonight. May He give rest to the weary heart, peace to the troubled mind, and tenderness to the words spoken in the morning. May the love that was poured out to you in Christ be poured out again between husband and wife, and may you wake to find grace waiting for you.
