This evening prayer is for anyone who lies down at night with a mind still running through the day’s problems. It is meant to be prayed before sleep, when the house is quiet and the list of worries has not yet stopped. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and details that are on your heart tonight.

Evening Prayer for Finding Peace

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and I am thankful for those moments. Some of it weighed on me, and I am not sure what to do with those pieces now. I have replayed conversations, rehearsed what I should have said, and worried about what tomorrow will ask of me. Please take these things from my hands tonight. I do not need to solve them before I sleep.

Quiet my thoughts the way a lake settles after the wind dies down. Where my body is tense, let it loosen. Where my heart is anxious about money, health, work, or the people I love, remind me that you are already awake and already at work. Keep watch over my family and the people I am responsible for while I rest. Guard my home from fear and from harm. Let me sleep without bracing against the morning. Thank you that I am held by you, not by my own strength. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind will not slow down. I give you the day and everything I could not finish in it. Take the worry I am carrying and set it down somewhere I cannot reach tonight. Settle my heart and let me breathe slowly. Watch over the people I love and over my own sleep. I trust you with what is unresolved. Give me rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly before you close your eyes. Let it remind you that rest is something God gives, not something you must earn by finishing everything first. Pray the words back to him as a statement of trust.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the habit of staying up late out of anxiety. Pray it as an honest admission that you are not in control of everything, and ask God to help you believe that he is the one who sustains you.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects worry with prayer. Take one worry from your day and turn it into a specific request. Then pray for the peace the passage promises, asking God to guard your heart and mind through the night.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

This verse links peace with a mind that stays fixed on God. Before you sleep, bring your thoughts back to him each time they drift. Pray for the steadiness this verse describes, one breath at a time.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites weary people to come to him. Use this verse to name the specific burdens you are setting down tonight. Thank him that the invitation is open, and ask him to take the weight you cannot carry any longer.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time about thirty minutes before you normally go to bed. Turn off the bright screens if you can, and sit on the edge of your bed or in a comfortable chair. Keep a pen and paper nearby so that any worry that surfaces can be written down and handed over, rather than replayed in your head. Pray the main prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it land.

If you share a home, invite a spouse, roommate, or child to pray the shorter version with you, taking turns with each line. You can also pray this prayer over someone who is struggling to sleep, speaking their name in place of the first person words. Ending the day together, even briefly, can remind everyone present that they are not carrying their burdens alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel also watch over you tonight. May he calm the thoughts that keep you awake and fill the quiet with his nearness. May you wake to a new day rested, held, and ready to receive whatever comes.
