This bedtime prayer is for those going through hard times, when the day has been heavy and sleep feels far away. Pray it at the end of the day, once the lights are low and before you lie down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Bedtime Prayer for Those Going Through Hard Times

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to You as it is. I bring the worry that followed me from morning to night, the phone call I dreaded, the bills I cannot stop thinking about, the hard conversation I keep replaying in my head. I bring the tiredness in my body and the ache in my heart. You know every part of what I carried today, and nothing about it surprises You.

So I set it down now. I hand You the things I cannot fix before dawn, and I ask You to carry them through the night. Be near to the people I love who are struggling too, especially those who are awake right now with their own fears. Give them rest they did not expect, and remind them that they are not alone in the dark. Thank You for the small mercies of this day, the meal, the kind word, the moment of quiet, because even in hard seasons You have not stopped giving good things.

Keep me safe while I sleep. Guard my mind from fear that wants to wake me at three in the morning, and give me enough trust to rest in Your care instead of gripping my problems. Let morning come with fresh strength, and help me meet it one step at a time. Into Your hands I commit my spirit and my night. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and I am carrying more than I can hold. Take my worries tonight and give me rest I have not earned but badly need. Watch over the people I love, and keep me in Your peace until morning. Thank You for being awake when I cannot be. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a sleep prayer in its own right. Read it slowly and let it become your own confession that safety and rest come from the Lord, not from how well you have managed your problems that day.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific burdens you are handing over. Speak each one aloud to God, then trust that He is able to sustain you while you sleep.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Let this promise of rest be the center of your prayer tonight. Imagine setting down a heavy load, and ask Jesus to show you what it means to come to Him weary and leave lighter.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to turn each anxious thought into a request. Pray through the worries one by one, asking God for peace that can guard your heart and mind when your thoughts begin to race.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by fixing your mind on God rather than on the problem. Repeat the idea of trusting Him as you settle into bed, letting your attention return to Him whenever worry pulls it away.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a consistent place for this prayer, such as the edge of your bed or a quiet chair in the bedroom, so your body learns that this is the moment to stop. Keep a small notebook nearby and write down the day’s burdens before you pray, then close the notebook as a physical sign that you are handing them to God. Some people find it helpful to hold something in their hands, like a smooth stone or the edge of a blanket, while they speak.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else, a spouse, a friend, or a child old enough to join in. Take turns reading lines aloud, or ask the other person to pray the words over you when you are too tired to speak. Praying together can remind you that hard times are easier to carry in community, and it can help you fall asleep with someone else keeping watch in prayer.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you give you rest tonight. May He quiet every fear that tries to wake you, and may His peace settle over your heart like a blanket. Whatever tomorrow holds, may you wake knowing you are held.
