This bedtime prayer is for anyone taking an exam, whether it is a final, a licensing test, a board exam, or a class quiz that feels bigger than it should. Pray it in the evening, after the books are closed and before you try to sleep. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Bedtime Prayer for Those Taking an Exam

Lord, the day is ending, and the test is still ahead of me. I have studied as well as I could, and now I need to set the books down. Some of my thoughts keep circling back to the questions I might get wrong, the time I might run out of, and the way my mind might go blank when I need it most. Please take those worries from my hands tonight. I do not have to carry them into my sleep.

Thank you that my worth does not rise or fall with a score. You know what I have learned and what I have not, and you know the work I have put in. Help me rest in that knowledge. If I am tired, let my body recover. If my memory feels thin, let me trust that what I need will come back to me when I sit down. Guard my sleep so that I wake up clearer than I went to bed.

Watch over me through the night and over the morning ahead. Calm my nerves on the drive or the walk to the testing room, and steady my breathing when I open the paper. Let me think clearly, read carefully, and take the next question one at a time. Whatever the result, let me remember that I am known by you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am anxious about the exam, and I am tired. Quiet my mind tonight and let me sleep. Help me remember what I have studied and trust you with what I cannot control. Keep me safe through the night and steady me in the morning. Thank you for being with me as I go into the test. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names the anxiety directly and points to prayer and thanksgiving as the way to bring it to God. Before you sleep, name the specific worries about the exam, then thank God for something you have already been given.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

David speaks of lying down in peace and sleeping, which is exactly what you need the night before a test. Pray this verse slowly as you settle into bed, asking God to make your sleep restful.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that rest is a gift and not a reward for finishing everything. Let your last study session end here, and ask God to give you sleep even if you feel you have not done enough.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks to a frightened people and promises to be with them and to strengthen them. Pray this promise over the morning of the exam, asking God to remind you of his presence when fear rises.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Trust is the heart of this proverb, and it applies to a test just as much as to any other uncertain path. Bring your own understanding to God, and ask him to make your steps straight as you move through the day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer near the end of your evening, once your study materials are packed and your phone is set aside. Sit on the edge of your bed or kneel by it, and keep something simple in your hands, like a cup of water or the folded notes for tomorrow, so your body has something to do while your mind settles. If the exam is early, you can also set your alarm and pray the shorter version when you wake.

If you are praying for someone else who is taking an exam, such as a child, a friend, or a sibling, read the prayer over them in your own words or ask them to pray it with you. Speaking it aloud together can take the pressure off both of you and remind you that you are not facing the test alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord guard your sleep and quiet every worry before it reaches your pillow. May he give you clear thinking and a steady heart when the paper is in front of you. Whatever the morning brings, may you rest tonight in the peace of knowing you are held.
