This is a daily prayer for anyone sitting an exam, whether it is a final, a licensing test, a certification or an entrance exam. Pray it in the morning before you leave for the day, or in the quiet minutes before you open the test booklet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayer for Those Taking an Exam

Lord, you know the knot in my stomach this morning. You know the hours I have spent with notes and flashcards, and you know the questions I am afraid I will not be able to answer. I bring my mind to you, because I cannot make it calm on my own. Settle my thoughts and help me remember what I have learned, the way you help a person find a path they have walked before.

Give me clear thinking when I sit down and steady hands when I write. If I freeze on a question, remind me to breathe and move on rather than letting one hard problem swallow the whole paper. If I doubt myself, remind me that my worth is not measured by a score. Help me do honest work, and let me trust you with the outcome, whatever it turns out to be. Thank you that you are with me in the room, even when no one else can see. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am about to begin, and my heart is racing. Quiet my mind. Help me recall what I have studied and focus on the next question only. Give me patience with myself and clarity in my answers. Whatever happens in the next hours, I trust you with it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Paul names anxiety directly and points to prayer as the answer. Use this verse to hand your nervousness to God before you walk into the exam room.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

When you cannot see how a question will turn out, pray this verse as a reminder to lean on God’s wisdom rather than your own certainty.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Ask God for wisdom in plain words, the way a student asks a teacher for help. Pray this verse while you look over the instructions one more time.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this promise when fear rises during the test. Speak it slowly, letting the reminder that God is with you steady your breathing.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Lift your eyes from the page and pray this psalm as a way of remembering where your help comes from. It works well on the walk to the exam center.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time that is yours alone, such as the drive to the testing center, a few minutes at the kitchen table before the day begins, or a quiet spot on campus. Holding a pen, a note card or your exam pass while you pray can help your hands stay busy and your attention stay focused on God.

You might also ask a friend, parent or small group to pray this prayer for you the night before. Let them read it aloud while you listen. Often the most helpful prayers are the ones someone else speaks over us when we are too tired or anxious to find words of our own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into the room and steady you in every question. May he give you clear thought, a calm heart and the honesty to do your best. Whatever the result, may you rest in the knowledge that you are known and loved.
