This night prayer is for anyone who has an exam ahead, whether it is a final, a licensing test, a board exam or a class quiz that feels bigger than it should. Pray it in the evening, once your books are closed and before you lie down, so that the worry of tomorrow does not follow you into sleep. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for Those Taking an Exam

Lord, the day is ending and I am still carrying the test in front of me. I have studied what I could, and some of it has stuck while some of it has slipped away, and I do not know how the questions will look. I am tired, and my mind keeps returning to the same worries: that I will freeze, that I will forget the one thing I needed, that everything I have worked for will be measured in a single morning. Quiet my thoughts now. Help me set down the stack of notes and the fear that comes with them.

Thank you that I do not have to earn your care by how I perform. Thank you for the hours I did give to my studies, for the people who quizzed me or made me tea, and for the mind you gave me to learn with. Guard my sleep tonight so that my body can rest and my memory can do its quiet work. If I wake in the night with a racing heart, remind me that you are awake and near. Give me a clear head in the morning, honest answers to the questions I know, and peace about the ones I do not. Whatever the result, let me remember that you hold me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am anxious about the exam tomorrow. Settle my mind and let me sleep. Help me remember what I have learned, and give me calm when the questions come. Thank you that I am known by you and not only by my score. Keep me safe through the night and bring me into the morning steady. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly as you lie down. Ask God to make your sleep a real rest, trusting that he keeps watch while you cannot.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the hours you have spent studying. Ask God to bless your effort without letting it turn into anxious striving that steals your sleep.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring each specific fear about the exam to God by name. Ask him for the calm that guards your heart and mind when the worries start to crowd in.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Use this verse to steady your thoughts. Pray that God would keep your mind fixed on him instead of replaying the same questions over and over.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Ask God to guide your steps tomorrow, from the walk to the exam room to the way you approach each question. Trust him with the outcome rather than leaning on your own fear.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed point in your evening, such as after brushing your teeth or once the lights go off, so that the prayer becomes a habit you can return to before every big test. Sit or lie in a quiet place, and if your hands feel restless, hold a pen, a glass of water or a pillow as you speak. Pray slowly, pausing after each paragraph to let the words settle before continuing.

If you are a parent, sibling, friend or teacher praying for someone who has an exam, you can read this prayer over them, changing the pronouns as needed. Pray it together at the kitchen table or on the phone the night before. Sharing the prayer with someone else often makes the worry feel less lonely, and it gives you both a reason to trust God together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you rest tonight and keep you in his peace as you sleep. May he bring to mind what you need in the morning and steady your hands and your heart when the test begins. Whatever the outcome, may you wake knowing that you are loved, held and never alone in what lies ahead.
