This bedtime prayer is for those working at night, whether you are a nurse on a late shift, a bakery worker, a security guard, a truck driver, or someone who sleeps in the daytime and wakes when the rest of the house is quiet. It is meant to be prayed as you wind down after a shift or before you lie down to sleep during the day. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God in the same spirit.

Bedtime Prayer for Those Working at Night

Lord, I come to you at the end of a long night, tired in body and maybe tired in mind too. You know the hours I spent awake while the world slept, the decisions I had to make quickly, the people I cared for or served, and the moments when I felt alone in the dark. Thank you for being awake with me. Thank you that nothing I faced tonight was hidden from you, and that you were present in the hallways, the parking lot, and the quiet stretches between tasks.

Now I release the shift to you. Take the worries I carried home with me, the things I could not fix, and the people I am still thinking about. Help my body rest even though my schedule feels upside down. Quiet my mind so I can sleep deeply, and let the daylight hours I am about to spend in rest be restorative rather than restless. Guard me while I sleep, and guard the people I love while I am gone. Give me a good sleep, and wake me refreshed for what comes next.

Father, thank you for the work you gave me and for the strength you gave me to do it. Forgive me for the impatience, the shortcuts, and the times I forgot that I was serving you as well as the people in front of me. Thank you for every life I touched tonight, even in small ways. I rest in your faithfulness now. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am done for now and I hand this night to you. Take the weight I carried and the worries that followed me home. Give my body the rest it needs and my mind the quiet it has been missing. Keep me and the people I love safe until I wake, and bring me back refreshed for the next shift. Thank you for being awake with me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

When you pray this psalm, you are reminding yourself that the one who watches over Israel never sleeps, which means you can sleep while he keeps watch over the hours you cannot. Let it shape your prayer for protection while you rest.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse lets you name peace as a gift from God rather than something you must produce yourself. Pray it slowly as you lie down, asking him to make you safe and settled even when your sleep schedule is strange.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Working long or irregular hours can make rest feel like a failure. This verse reminds you that God gives sleep to those he loves, so you can receive rest as his provision and pray for it with thanks.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to people who are weary and burdened, which describes many night workers. Bring him your exhaustion at the end of the shift and ask him to give you the rest he promised.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

After a hard night, you can start the next day remembering that God’s mercies are new each morning. Pray this as a way of looking ahead to tomorrow with hope rather than dread.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer when your shift is over and you are settling into bed, or in the car on the drive home before you walk through the door. If you work nights and sleep in the day, it can help to pray it at the same spot each morning, such as beside your bed with the curtains drawn. Place your hand on something solid, like the pillow, the steering wheel, or the back of a chair, as a physical way of letting go of the shift.

If you live with family, a partner, or a roommate, consider asking someone to pray it with you or over you before they leave for work or while you are both at home. A friend or family member who prays for you during the hours you are awake can be a steady reminder that you are not carrying the night alone. Keep the prayer short on hard nights and longer on nights when you have time to reflect.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never slumbers keep watch over you as you rest. May your sleep be deep and unbroken, and may you wake with strength for the work ahead. May the one who was with you in every quiet hour of your shift remain with you now, and may you feel his peace settle over you like a warm blanket.
