This night prayer for trusting God is for the end of the day, when the worries you carried all day are still close and sleep feels far away. Pray it at bedtime, in bed or in a quiet chair, whenever you need to hand the day and the night over to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Night Prayer for Trusting God

Father, the day is ending, and I am bringing it to you as it is. I bring the conversations that went badly, the decisions I am not sure I made well, and the list of things I did not finish. I bring the people I love and the ones I am worried about. Some of these I can fix tomorrow, and some I cannot fix at all. Tonight I am asking you to take what I cannot hold.

Lord, help me to rest in the fact that you do not sleep and you do not forget anyone. When my mind starts running through every what-if, quiet it. When I feel I must keep watch over my family, my work and my future, remind me that you are already keeping watch. Let me trust you with the outcomes I cannot control, and let me believe that your care reaches farther than my worry does.

Protect us through the night. Guard our bodies while we sleep, give us rest that actually restores us, and wake us in the morning with fresh hope. Thank you for the good parts of this day, even the small ones I almost missed. I trust you with tomorrow the same way I trust you with tonight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired, and my mind will not slow down. I give you this day and everything still unsettled in it. I trust you with the people I love and the problems I cannot solve tonight. Keep us safe, give us rest, and remind me that you are awake and faithful while I sleep. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly as you lie down, letting each phrase become a statement of trust. It names the peace God gives and the safety he provides, which are exactly what a restless mind needs to hear before sleep.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this passage to turn your worry over to the one who never tires. Speak the words back to God as a reminder that he is keeping watch over you and over the people you are praying for.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Read this verse as a permission slip to stop striving. Ask God to help you release the pressure to earn your rest, and receive sleep as a gift he gives to those he loves.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your heaviest burdens to Jesus in this prayer, naming them one by one if you can. Ask him to take the weight and teach you to rest in his care instead of carrying everything alone.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Let this passage guide you from anxious thoughts into prayer. Name each worry in God’s presence, then pray for the peace that the verse promises will guard your heart and mind through the night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time just before you turn off the light, when the house is quiet and your phone is out of reach. If your hands feel restless, hold something simple, like the edge of your pillow or your own folded hands, and let the physical stillness help your mind settle. You might also write down the two or three worries that keep returning, then read the prayer over them, placing each one in God’s hands as you go.

If you share a home or a bed with someone, pray the prayer together, taking turns with the lines. It can also be a gift to pray it over a child, a spouse or a friend who is struggling to sleep, changing “I” and “me” to “they” and “them.” Whoever you pray it with, end by saying the final line together so that the trust is shared, not carried alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never sleeps keep you in his peace tonight. May the burdens you set down stay with him, and may you wake to find his mercies new. Rest well, knowing you are held. Sleep in God’s care.
