This is a short prayer for faith, written for the moments when belief feels weak, distant or hard to hold onto. You can pray it when you wake up unsure, when a difficult news call leaves you shaken, or when you simply want your trust in God to feel like something you actually possess. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words where yours fit better.
Short Prayer for Faith
Lord, you know that my faith is not always steady. Some days I believe you are near and good without any effort at all, and other days I feel like I am reaching into an empty room. I do not want to pretend otherwise with you. I bring you the doubts I am afraid to say out loud, the questions that keep me awake, and the disappointments that have made it harder to trust you again.
Give me the faith that holds even when I cannot see how things will turn out. Help me remember what you have already done, in my life and in the lives of people who came before me. When my thoughts spin toward worry, quiet them and turn my attention back to your character, which does not change. Teach me to take the next small step of obedience, even if my heart is only half in it. Meet me in my weakness and let my trust grow slowly, the way a seed grows, without my forcing it. I ask this in the name of Jesus, who is the source and finisher of my faith. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I believe, but help my unbelief. I am tired and my trust feels thin right now. Hold onto me when I cannot hold onto you. Remind me that you are faithful today, and let that be enough for this moment. Help me take one honest step toward you, even a small one. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Mark 9:24
Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, “I believe. Help my unbelief!”
(WEB)
This is the father of a sick boy, speaking to Jesus with mixed belief and honest need. Pray it when you feel the same tension, and let God see both the faith you have and the doubt you are carrying.
Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.
(WEB)
This verse describes faith as confidence in what is hoped for and assurance about what is not yet seen. Pray it slowly, asking God to make that assurance real in the places where you currently feel only uncertainty.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
Here you are invited to trust God with your whole heart rather than leaning only on your own understanding. Use these words when your own reasoning has run out of answers and you need to release control.
Psalm 56:3
When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.
(WEB)
David names fear honestly and then chooses to trust. Pray this verse on days when fear is loud, asking God to make your trust louder in the moment you need it most.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
(WEB)
God speaks directly to those who are anxious and tells them he is with them and will strengthen them. Read it as a promise addressed to you by name, and pray it back to him with gratitude.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray this in the early morning, before the phone and the day’s demands take over. Sit somewhere quiet, such as a kitchen chair or the edge of your bed, and keep a cup of something warm in your hands. The physical stillness can help your heart slow down enough to mean the words you are saying.
You might also pray this with someone you trust, such as a spouse, a friend or a small group at church. Ask them to read it with you, or to pray the shorter version for you when you cannot find words of your own. Faith often grows more easily when it is carried by more than one person.
A Blessing to Close
May the God who is faithful to every generation steady your heart today. May he meet your doubts with patience, your questions with truth, and your weakness with strength that is not your own. Rest in the knowledge that your trust, however small, is held by a God who has never let go of his people.
