This morning prayer is for anyone who wants their first words of the day to ask God for love and unity with the people they will meet. You can pray it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own names and worries into it. It works best in the first quiet minutes after you wake, before the phone, the kids, or the to-do list takes over.
Morning Prayers for Love and Unity
Lord, thank you for this new morning. Before I step into my day, I bring you my heart, which is often quicker to judge than to love. Soften the places in me that are tired of people, and give me patience with the ones who test me, especially at home, at work, and in the family group chat that never seems to stop. Help me hear my spouse, my children, and my coworkers before I decide what they mean.
Father, I ask for unity where there is division. Show me where I have taken a side too quickly, and give me the humility to admit it. Let my words today build people up rather than tear them down. When someone disagrees with me, help me look for the person behind the opinion. Make me a peacemaker in small things, like the tone of an email, the way I answer a question, and how I treat the stranger in the checkout line. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am starting this day already tempted to be irritable. Fill me with your love before I speak. Give me unity with the people I will see today, and patience with the ones who wear me out. Help me to be kind where I would rather be right, and to pray for the people I find hard to love. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
1 Corinthians 13:4-5
4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…
(WEB)
Read this slowly, then pray each description as a request for your own day. Ask God to make you patient, kind, and less easily provoked by the people you meet first.
Colossians 3:14
Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.
(WEB)
Paul names love as the thing that binds everything else together. Pray that love will be the outer layer of every choice you make today, holding your other virtues in place.
Ephesians 4:2-3
2 With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love; 3 being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
(WEB)
Unity here is something you keep, not something you invent. Ask God to help you bear with others in humility and to protect the peace between you and the people in your path.
Romans 12:18
If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.
(WEB)
Paul admits that peace is not always possible, but he asks for what is within your reach. Pray for the courage to do your part today and for the wisdom to let go of what is not yours to fix.
John 13:34-35
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
(WEB)
Jesus gives love as a command and as a witness. Pray that the people you meet today will recognize something of Christ in the way you treat them.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it while you are still in bed or sitting with your first cup of coffee, before you check messages or news. If you share a home, you might keep a copy on the kitchen counter and read it aloud with whoever is awake. A small gesture helps too: place a hand on your chest or hold a mug with both hands while you speak, so your body stays in the prayer when your mind wanders.
You can also invite someone else to pray it with you, whether a spouse, a friend who texts you each morning, or a small group that meets online. Ask them to pray for one person who is hard for you to love. Then, when the day gets difficult, remember that someone else is also asking God for that same unity.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord make your love grow and overflow toward everyone you meet today. May he give peace to the people who are weary, and guard the unity of your home, your church, and your work. Go into this day held by a God who is patient, faithful, and always near.
