This morning prayer is for anyone who wakes up carrying pain, worry about a diagnosis, or the heaviness of a body or heart that is not yet well. Pray it when you first open your eyes or before your feet touch the floor, so that the first words of your day are spoken to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Morning Prayer for Healing and Comfort
Father, this new day has come, and I am waking up with things I did not choose. My body aches in places I wish it did not, and I am tired before I have even started. Some of my worry is about the appointment I have this week, the test results I am waiting on, and the medicine that may or may not be working. Please meet me in those specific fears and not only in the general sense of being unwell.
Lord, I ask for healing in my body and for steadiness in my mind. Touch what is sick, ease what is sore, and give the doctors and nurses wisdom as they care for me or for the people I love. Where I cannot see any change, help me trust that you are still at work beneath the surface. Give me strength for the tasks I face today: getting dressed, making breakfast, sitting in the car, answering the phone, and making it through the conversations I dread. Comfort me when the fear rises, and remind me that I am not alone in this room or in this day. I place my body, my family, and my future in your hands. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am hurting this morning, and I need you. Be near me as I get up, and give me enough healing and enough peace to face what this day brings. Steady my heart when I am afraid, and help me take the next small step. Hold the people I will meet today, and hold me too. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 147:3
He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
(WEB)
Read this slowly as a reminder that the God who created you is the one who binds up broken places. Pray it over the injuries and grief you carry into the morning, asking him to do the healing only he can do.
Isaiah 41:10
Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.
(WEB)
Use this verse when fear comes first thing in the morning. Speak it aloud, naming the fears you have, and ask God to hold you steady through each hour until evening.
Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.
(WEB)
Pray this when you feel crushed or alone in your suffering. Thank God that he is near to you right now, not only at some later point when things improve.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Bring your exhaustion to God through this invitation. Ask him to give you rest for your body and your spirit before the day’s demands begin to press on you.
2 Corinthians 12:9
He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.
(WEB)
Pray this when your strength feels gone. Ask God to show his grace in your weakness today, and to help you depend on him rather than on your own endurance.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying this prayer while you are still in bed, before the phone and the news have a chance to fill your mind. If you are sitting up, keep a glass of water and a box of tissues close by, and rest a hand on the place that hurts most. Speaking slowly helps, so let the pauses between sentences be spaces where you listen for God’s presence.
You can also invite someone else to pray it with you, whether a spouse, a friend, a pastor, or a family member who is caring for you. Keep a copy on your nightstand or save it on your phone so it is ready on hard mornings. On days when you cannot find the words at all, simply repeat the short version and trust that God hears the groaning beneath your prayers.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who heals you go before you into this day, and may his peace guard the heart that is weary and frightened. May he give comfort to the one who is suffering, strength to the one who is tired, and courage to the one who must face hard news. May you wake each morning knowing that you are held, seen, and loved.
