This is a morning prayer for a safe journey, written for the hours before you leave home for a drive, a flight, a commute or a trip you have been dreading or looking forward to. Pray it over your coffee, at the front door, or in the car before you turn the key. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your day needs them.

Morning Prayer for a Safe Journey

Lord, I start this day knowing that the road ahead is not mine to control. I am thinking about the miles I have to cover, the traffic I cannot see yet, the weather that may turn, and the other drivers who are as tired and distracted as I am. Keep my hands steady on the wheel and my mind clear when I need to make a decision quickly. Watch over the people sharing the road with me, including the ones I will never meet, and let me be patient rather than angry when someone cuts me off.

I also bring you the people I am traveling toward and the people I leave behind. Be with the ones who are waiting for me to arrive, and be with the ones who will worry until they hear I am safe. Give me good sense about when to stop, when to slow down, and when to ask for help. If my plans change, if I am delayed or rerouted, remind me that you were in control before I left and you are still in control now. Thank you for the gift of today and the chance to move through it with you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am heading out and I need you in this moment. Guard my path and the path of everyone around me. Keep my eyes sharp, my reactions calm, and my heart at peace even if the day gets long or the road gets hard. Bring me to my destination and bring me home again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly before you leave, letting the words stand for the whole day. Ask the Lord to keep you from harm on the way out and on the way back, and to guard your coming and going in every part of your schedule.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel anxious about a specific part of the trip, such as a highway merge or a difficult flight. Ask God to send his care ahead of you, the way the psalm describes angels being commissioned for protection.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray this when you are unsure which route to take, which turn to make, or whether to go at all. Ask God to make your paths straight and to help you trust his direction over your own guesses about the road.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this verse when fear rises in your chest before you have even left the driveway. Let it remind you that God’s presence goes with you, and pray for courage to keep moving forward one mile at a time.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Turn to this verse when the day feels unstable or the journey seems uncertain. Ask God to be your refuge and strength, and thank him that he is near even when conditions around you are changing quickly.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still at home, before the car keys are in your hand or the suitcase is zipped. Sitting down for a minute with a cup of something warm helps the words settle before the rush begins. If you drive, you might also pray a short line silently each time you buckle up or check your mirrors, so the morning prayer carries through the whole trip.

If someone else is traveling with you, or someone is waiting by the phone for your arrival, invite them to pray it too. Read it aloud together, or text them the prayer so they can pray it at the same time from wherever they are. Shared prayer gives you a steadier sense of company on the road, and it reminds you that you do not carry the worry alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you on every mile of this day. May he guard your going out and your coming home, and may you arrive safe, rested enough, and grateful for the one who kept watch over you the whole way.
