These morning prayers for my grandchildren are written for the first quiet minutes of the day, before the school run, the phone calls, or the first cup of coffee has cooled. You can read the prayer below aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Either way, it puts your grandchildren in God’s hands before anything else pulls at their day.

Morning Prayers for My Grandchildren

Father, thank you for this new morning and for the gift of these children. Before they wake fully, I bring them to you. Go ahead of them into the classroom, the playground, the bus line and the kitchen table. Give them clear minds for their lessons and kind words for their friends. Where they feel small or unsure of themselves, remind them that they are known and loved by you.

Lord, watch over their bodies and their hearts today. Keep them safe on the roads and in the places where they play. Guard their sleep and their appetite, and give them courage when they face something hard. Help them to tell the truth, to share what they have, and to show patience when they are tired. Let them see you at work in ordinary things, and let my own life point them toward you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you are already at work in my grandchildren’s day. Walk with them through every hour, steady their hearts, and give them wisdom for what they must face. Keep them safe, help them be kind, and let them feel your nearness wherever they go. I trust them to you this morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this over your grandchildren as they leave the house. Ask the Lord to keep their going out and their coming in, so that every trip to school, practice or the store is held in his care.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse when a grandchild faces a decision or a confusing day. Pray that they would trust God more than their own understanding and look to him for the way ahead.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this for a grandchild who wakes up worried about a test, a friend or a change at home. Ask God to replace their anxiety with a quiet peace that guards the heart and mind.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Read this when a grandchild is tired, discouraged or facing a long day. Pray that the Lord would renew their strength so they can keep going without losing heart.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this for the work your grandchildren do, whether it is homework, chores or play. Ask that they would give their best effort as something offered to the Lord.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the house is still quiet, perhaps while the kettle heats or before anyone is awake. Sit in the same chair each morning so the habit becomes familiar. If you can, hold a photo of each grandchild or touch something they have made, such as a drawing or a school bag, to keep their faces in mind as you pray.

You might invite a son, daughter or other grandparent to pray the same words for the children at the same time, even from a different house. Many families find it meaningful to text the children a short verse before school, so they know someone has been praying for them. Keep the prayer short enough to say every day, and let it grow into a rhythm you both can keep.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless these children and keep them through the day ahead. May his face shine on them and his peace settle over their hearts. Whatever comes their way, may they know they are never alone, and may they grow in kindness, courage and faith as they go.
