This morning prayer is for the moment when you wake up unsure which way to go, whether the decision in front of you is about work, a relationship, a move, or simply how to spend the hours ahead. Pray it before you check your phone or step into the day’s first demands. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Morning Prayer for Finding Direction

Lord, I open my eyes this morning aware that I don’t know the way forward on everything. There are choices pressing on me: the conversation I have been putting off, the job offer I can’t stop thinking about, the bills that don’t quite add up, the question of whether I am doing enough for the people I love. Before my thoughts run ahead of me, I bring them to you and ask you to slow them down. Quiet the noise of the coming day so I can hear you.

Show me the next faithful step, even if I can’t see the whole road. Help me to be honest about what I want and what I fear, and to tell apart the voice of pressure from the voice of your leading. Give me patience with my own uncertainty, and keep me from demanding a clear answer by lunchtime. Guide the decisions I make today, the emails I send and the words I choose with the people I meet, so that they reflect your care and not just my hurry. Thank you that you are not confused about where I am going. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I don’t know what to do next, and I’m asking you to show me. Give me a clear mind for this hour and a willing heart for whatever you put in front of me. Let me hear you above my worry, and let me take the next small step with courage. I trust that you know the path even when I cannot see it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and pray it as an admission that your own understanding has limits. Ask God to help you lean on him in the specific decision you face today, and to straighten the path where your own plans have gotten crooked.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a promise you are asking God to keep. Name the place where you feel stuck and ask him to be the one who instructs and watches over you there, so that you are not left guessing alone.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Use this verse for the practical choices of the morning. A lamp shows the next few steps rather than the whole journey, so pray for enough light to see what is directly ahead and to trust God for the rest.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel embarrassed to admit you don’t know what to do. Ask God for wisdom in the decision at hand, trusting that he gives generously and does not scold you for asking.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse while you listen in the quiet before the day begins. Ask God to make his direction audible to you, and to give you the discernment to notice it when the voice you hear is his.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray it before you get out of bed or while you wait for the kettle to boil, when the house is still quiet and your thoughts have not yet been pulled in a dozen directions. If you can, keep a pen and paper near your coffee and write down the one decision you most want guidance on. Pray the prayer over that specific item, and then leave the paper where you will see it again at midday.

You might also ask a trusted friend, spouse, or small group to pray this prayer with you or for you, especially when the decision feels heavy. Ask them to check in with you later in the week to hear how you are doing. Sharing the uncertainty with others often makes the next step feel less lonely and easier to take.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and make the path plain enough for the next step. May he steady your heart when the choices feel crowded, and give you peace in the places where you cannot yet see the way. Go forward in his good company and trust that he is already at work.
