Numbers 6 sets out two things God gave Israel: the rules for the Nazirite vow, a voluntary season of separation to the LORD, and the blessing Aaron and his sons were to speak over the people. These questions are built for a small group, a Sunday class, or a personal study. Each section gives you the discussion prompt and a leader’s note, so you can use the chapter without preparing a separate summary.

Numbers 6 at a Glance

The chapter opens with God instructing Moses to speak to Israel about anyone, man or woman, who takes a Nazirite vow. The vow involves abstaining from wine and grape products, leaving the hair uncut, and avoiding contact with the dead. Verses 9 through 12 deal with what happens when a Nazirite is defiled unexpectedly, and verses 13 through 21 describe the closing sacrifices that end the period of separation.

The chapter then turns in verses 22 through 27 to the priestly blessing, a short three-part prayer God tells Aaron and his sons to speak over the people. The two halves are linked by the theme of being set apart and held close by God, and the chapter closes with God promising to bless Israel through the words spoken by the priests.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask the group to point to the exact words in the text, and keep the discussion grounded in what the chapter literally records. Let people answer briefly before moving on.

Numbers 6:2

“Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them: ‘When either man or woman shall make a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself to the LORD…

(WEB)

This verse introduces the vow and makes clear it was open to both men and women. Reading it aloud reminds the group that this kind of devotion was available to everyone in the community.

Numbers 6:5

“‘All the days of his vow of separation no razor shall come on his head, until the days are fulfilled, in which he separates himself to the LORD. He shall be holy. He shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow long.

(WEB)

The verse describes the visible sign of the vow and the holiness it expresses. Reading it aloud helps the group picture what the commitment looked like in ordinary life.

Numbers 6:8

All the days of his separation he is holy to the LORD.

(WEB)

This verse sums up the whole vow in one sentence about being holy to the LORD. Reading it aloud gives the group a clear anchor before they move into the harder details.

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This is the heart of the chapter, the three-part blessing of the LORD over his people. Reading it slowly, perhaps twice, lets the group hear the rhythm and the repeated name of God.

Numbers 6:27

“So they shall put my name on the children of Israel; and I will bless them.”

(WEB)

This final verse links the blessing to God’s own promise to act on his people. Reading it aloud helps the group end the reading with confidence in God’s faithfulness.

Memory Verse for Numbers 6

Numbers 6:24

‘The LORD bless you, and keep you.

(WEB)

This short line from the priestly blessing is easy to memorize and easy to speak over others. Encourage the group to repeat it together and then carry it into the week as a prayer for someone they love.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you for the way you teach us to be set apart for you and for the blessing you give us through your own words. Thank you that the Nazirite vow reminds us that devotion is good and that you make a way back when we stumble. Help us to live with intention, to notice the habits that pull us away from you, and to return quickly when we fall short. Teach us to speak your blessing over the people in our lives, so that they too may know your keeping, your face shining on them, and your peace. Make our words and our lives point to you. Amen.
