Joshua 11 describes the great northern coalition of Canaanite kings gathering against Israel at the waters of Merom, and Israel’s decisive victory over them under Joshua’s command. These questions are for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study, and they walk through the chapter in three movements: what the text says, what it means, and how it shapes daily obedience and trust.

Joshua 11 at a Glance

The chapter opens with King Jabin of Hazor rallying a large alliance of northern kings, whose combined army gathers by the waters of Merom. The LORD encourages Joshua with a promise of victory, and Israel attacks suddenly and routs the coalition, pursuing the enemy far from the battlefield.

The rest of the chapter summarizes the campaign: Hazor is burned, the cities and kings are defeated as Moses had commanded, and the narrator notes that Israel kept the plunder but not the cities on their mounds. The chapter closes with a wide sweep of conquered territory and the statement that the land finally had rest from war.

Observation Questions

Use these first to make sure the group has actually read the text together before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask someone to read the passage aloud, then go through each question slowly and point back to the verses.

Joshua 11:6

The LORD said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid because of them; for tomorrow at this time, I will deliver them up all slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”

(WEB)

Read this verse early in the session because it contains the LORD’s word of encouragement before the battle. It frames the whole chapter around trust in God’s promise rather than in the size of the enemy army.

Joshua 11:9

Joshua did to them as the LORD told him. He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

(WEB)

This verse shows Joshua’s immediate obedience to the LORD’s instructions. Reading it aloud helps the group hear how his response matched the command closely and without hesitation.

Joshua 11:15

As the LORD commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua. Joshua did so. He left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses.

(WEB)

Read this verse to highlight the chain of faithful obedience from the LORD to Moses to Joshua. It anchors the discussion of leadership and submission to God’s word.

Joshua 11:20

For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, to come against Israel in battle, that he might utterly destroy them, that they might have no favor, but that he might destroy them, as the LORD commanded Moses.

(WEB)

This verse is difficult and deserves careful reading. Reading it aloud gives the group a chance to discuss the hardening of hearts and God’s sovereign purposes with humility and honesty.

Joshua 11:23

So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD spoke to Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. The land had rest from war.

(WEB)

End the reading with this verse, which summarizes the chapter’s theme of fulfilled promise and gives the group a clear image of God’s faithfulness to his people.

Memory Verse for Joshua 11

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come before you thankful that you keep your promises, even when the enemies in our lives seem vast and the way ahead is unclear. Give us the courage to trust your word before we see the outcome, as Joshua did when he moved against the coalition at Merom. Show us where we have been partial in our obedience, and give us the grace to follow you fully in those areas. Lead us into the rest you give, and help us to live in the confidence that you are faithful to finish what you have begun in us. Amen.
