Ezra 7 introduces Ezra the priest and scribe, who travels from Babylon to Jerusalem under a decree from King Artaxerxes. The questions below are built for small groups, Sunday classes and personal study. Each set moves from what the chapter says, to what it means, to how it shapes daily life.

Ezra 7 at a Glance

The chapter opens with Ezra’s genealogy, tracing him back to Aaron, and then describes his purpose: he has set his heart to study, practice and teach the law of the LORD. Verses 11 through 26 contain the king’s letter, which grants Ezra resources, authority and protection for the return of exiles and the restoration of worship in Jerusalem.

The chapter closes with Ezra’s own prayer of praise in verses 27 and 28, where he credits God for the king’s favor and for his own strength. Use the questions in order, or pick one section if your time is short.

Observation Questions

Use these first to make sure everyone has read the text carefully before anyone offers an interpretation. Let the group answer from the passage itself, and point to specific verses when someone gives a summary.

The opening of the king’s letter introduces the official tone of the decree. Reading it helps the group hear how a foreign ruler describes Ezra and his God.

This verse shows the king’s commitment to providing for the work in Jerusalem. Reading it shows the group how Ezra’s mission was supported by resources from outside Israel.

Ezra 7:27-28

27 Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the LORD’s house which is in Jerusalem; 28 and has extended loving kindness to me before the king and his counselors, and before all the king’s mighty princes. I was strengthened according to the LORD my God’s hand on me, and I gathered together chief men out of Israel to go up with me.

Ezra’s prayer of praise closes the chapter and gives the group a model for thankful response. Read it at the end of the session to shift from study to worship.

Memory Verse for Ezra 7

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you for the ways you prepared Ezra and moved kings to serve your purposes. Give us hearts that, like his, are set on seeking your word, living it faithfully and sharing it with others. Where we are tempted to rely only on our own skill or standing, remind us that every good gift comes from your hand. Strengthen each person here for the work ahead, and let our time together point back to you. Amen.
