This page offers questions and answers for studying 1 Chronicles 14, a chapter about King David’s growing household, Hiram’s gift of building materials, and two battles with the Philistines. It is written for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study, and each set of questions comes with a note on how to lead the discussion.

1 Chronicles 14 at a Glance

The chapter opens with Hiram, king of Tyre, sending cedar, masons and carpenters to build David a house. The writer then notes that David recognized the LORD had established him as king, and that David’s family grew with more wives and children in Jerusalem.

The second half turns to war. When the Philistines hear David is king over all Israel, they come up to seek him. David twice asks God for direction, and each time the answer shapes the outcome: a direct attack at Baal Perazim, then a flanking move at the mulberry trees. The chapter closes with the fame of David spreading among the nations.

Observation Questions

Use these questions at the start of the session to let everyone describe what the text actually says before anyone interprets it. Ask people to point to the verse before answering, and keep the answers short and factual.

1 Chronicles 14:2

David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel; for his kingdom was exalted on high, for his people Israel’s sake.

(WEB)

Read this early in the session to frame the whole chapter. It states plainly that David’s kingship came from the LORD and was for the sake of God’s people, which gives the group a clear lens for everything that follows.

1 Chronicles 14:10

David inquired of God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?” The LORD said to him, “Go up; for I will deliver them into your hand.”

(WEB)

This verse records David’s question to God and God’s answer, and it is the hinge of the first battle. Reading it aloud lets the group hear the direct exchange and reflect on what it means to ask before acting.

1 Chronicles 14:11

So they came up to Baal Perazim, and David defeated them there. David said, God has broken my enemies by my hand, like waters breaking out. Therefore they called the name of that place Baal Perazim.

(WEB)

Here David explains the victory and the name given to the place. Reading this verse helps the group see how the writer connects the event with a memorable name and a clear account of God’s action.

1 Chronicles 14:14-15

14 David inquired again of God; and God said to him, “You shall not go up after them. Turn away from them, and come on them opposite the mulberry trees. 15 When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry trees, then go out to battle; for God has gone out before you to strike the army of the Philistines.”

(WEB)

These verses carry God’s different instruction for the second attack. Read them together so the group can notice the contrast with the first battle and discuss why God gives new direction at a new moment.

1 Chronicles 14:17

The fame of David went out into all lands; and the LORD brought the fear of him on all nations.

(WEB)

Ending the reading here lets the chapter close on its main theme: the LORD is the source of David’s fame and of the fear that falls on the nations. Pause after reading so the group can respond.

Memory Verse for 1 Chronicles 14

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you that you establish and strengthen those who depend on you, and that you give direction when we do not know which way to go. Help us to ask you before we act, to listen patiently for your signs, and to give you the credit for whatever good comes from our lives. Teach us to trust you through seasons of growth and seasons of conflict alike. Keep us faithful in the ordinary days and steady in the hard ones, for your glory and for the good of others. Amen.
