This morning prayer is written for someone who is sick, or for a person you love who is sick, and it is meant for the first minutes of the day, before the medicine schedule, the phone calls and the long hours of waiting begin. You can read it aloud exactly as it is written, or let it be a starting point and put the prayer into your own words. Either way, it gives the day to God before the day has a chance to take shape on its own.
Morning Prayer for the Sick
Father, I come to you before the day has started, and I bring you the body that is weak this morning. I bring you the pain that woke us up, the fever that will not break, the heaviness in the chest and the stiffness in the joints. You know every symptom by name. Be near to the one who is sick, and let them feel your nearness in the quiet part of the morning, before the first wave of discomfort rises.
Give strength for the ordinary tasks ahead: the first sip of water, the trip to the bathroom, the nurse who comes at eight, the doctor who will call with results we are dreading. Steady our hands when we have to lift, measure, swallow or sign. Give patience to the one who is tired of being tired, and grace to the one who is tired of watching. If the hours are long, let them be full of small mercies, a visit that lifts the spirit, a meal that tastes good, a few minutes of sleep that comes without fear.
Above all, we ask for peace that does not depend on good news. Where we are afraid, calm us. Where we are angry or grieving, let us say so honestly to you. Heal what can be healed, and sustain what cannot yet be healed, and give us trust that you are with us in both. We put this day in your hands and trust you with what comes next. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, this is hard, and I am asking you for help before I do anything else. Be with the one who is sick this morning. Give them rest where there is pain, strength where there is weakness, and courage for what the day brings. Keep us both close to you as we wait and as we act. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 41:3
The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.
(WEB)
Pray this verse over the sick person’s bed as a reminder that God does not leave them alone on the couch or in the hospital chair. Ask him to strengthen them in the hours when they feel least able to get up.
Psalm 147:3
He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.
(WEB)
Read this slowly while you sit beside the sick one. Ask God to bind up the wounds that are visible and the ones that are hidden, the ones in the heart as much as in the body.
Isaiah 40:29
He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.
(WEB)
Use this verse when the sick person feels worn out before the morning has begun. Ask God to give power to the faint, and to give it again as the day goes on.
James 5:15
And the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
(WEB)
Pray this verse with faith and with honesty about what you hope for. Ask the Lord to raise up the sick one, and to forgive any burden of sin or regret they may be carrying.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Speak this invitation over a weary body and a worried mind. Ask Jesus to give rest to the one who has been carrying pain, fear and the exhaustion of illness since the night before.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer in the first quiet minutes after you wake, if you can, while the room is still and before the phone starts ringing or the first symptom demands attention. Sit beside the bed, or hold the hand of the one who is sick if they are willing. A cup of tea or a glass of water in your hands can help you stay present and keep your attention from wandering to the list of things waiting for you.
Invite someone else to pray it with you, a family member, a friend, a pastor or a church member who knows the situation. Read the prayer aloud together, taking turns on each paragraph. If the sick person is too weak to speak, pray it quietly over them and then ask them to nod or squeeze your hand at the end. The prayer belongs to the whole circle of people who love them, and it can be prayed again on the next morning and the one after.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside the one who is sick. May his peace guard their heart and his strength meet them in every weak moment. May he give you both enough grace for the hours ahead, and may you rest in his love when the day is done.
