This morning prayer is for anyone heading into work today, whether the job is at a desk, on a shift, in a classroom, behind a counter or on a job site. Pray it as you wake, over coffee, in the car before you walk in, or during the first quiet minute at your station. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your day calls for them.

Morning Prayers for Those Working Today

Lord, thank you for this new morning and for the gift of another day of work. Before I open my email, pick up my phone, or walk through the door, I want to put my day into your hands. Go ahead of me into the meetings, the deadlines, the difficult conversations and the ordinary routines. Where I am tempted to measure myself by what I accomplish, remind me that my worth rests in you and not in my output.

Give me a clear mind and steady patience. Help me to listen well to the people I work with, to speak honestly and kindly, and to receive correction without losing my dignity. If someone at work is struggling, let me notice them and offer help where I can. Keep me from gossip, from cutting corners, and from the quiet pride that wants credit for every good thing. Give me the courage to do right when no one is watching.

Be with my coworkers, my supervisors and the customers or students I will meet today. Protect my family while I am away and bring me home at the end of the day with a heart still tender toward you. Whatever I accomplish today, let it be done with honest effort and gratitude, for the work is yours and I am only your servant in it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am heading into work and I need you. Steady my hands and quiet my thoughts. Help me be honest, patient and useful to the people around me. Guard my tongue when the pressure rises, and remind me that I am working for you as much as for anyone else. Go with me today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you pick up the first task of the day. Ask God to help you give your effort to the work in front of you, even the parts no one will notice, as though you were doing it for him.

Psalm 90:17

Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our hands.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly before your shift begins. Ask that the work of your hands would be established and fruitful, and that God would make your daily labor meaningful beyond what you can see.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed.

(WEB)

Use this verse to hand your plans to the Lord before you make them. Name the projects and decisions ahead, and ask him to direct them according to his good purposes.

Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

(WEB)

Bring the worries you carry into work today, the deadlines, the performance review, the money, to God in prayer. Pray this verse as a way to set down anxiety before it grows through the morning.

Ecclesiastes 9:10

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor plan, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel the pull to rush or to coast. Ask God to help you give your full attention to the task at hand, trusting that each honest day of work is a gift from him.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer in the first ten minutes of the day, before the phone and the inbox take over. Sit somewhere quiet if you can, with a cup of something warm in your hands. If you are rushing out the door, pray the shorter version while you lock up or start the car. Writing a few key names or tasks on a card and keeping it in your bag or on your desk can help you return to the prayer during the day.

You might also pray this with a spouse, a roommate or a friend who works alongside you or in a similar field. Praying for one another’s workplaces builds trust and reminds you that you are not carrying your job alone. If you lead a team, you can read the main prayer aloud at the start of a shift and invite others to add their own requests.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every meeting, task and conversation today. May he give you wisdom where you feel unsure, patience where you feel tested, and joy in the small faithfulness of ordinary work. May he bring you home safely and fill your evening with rest.
