A simple prayer for discernment is a short, honest request for God to show you what is true, what is good, and what to do next. It is for the moments when you face a decision, a conversation, or a crossroads and cannot yet see the path clearly. Pray it before a choice, during a long drive, or first thing in the morning when your mind is still quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the same needs.

Simple Prayer for Discernment

Lord, you see the whole road ahead, and I only see the next few steps. I come to you because I do not want to decide this out of fear, pressure, or the desire to make the question go away. I have been turning this over in my mind for days, and my thoughts keep circling back to the same worries. Quiet them now. Help me name what I am really afraid of, and help me set aside the voices that sound urgent but are not wise.

Show me what is true about this situation, even where the truth is uncomfortable. Give me clear eyes for the people involved, including my own motives. If there is a door you want me to walk through, open it plainly. If there is a door you want me to leave closed, help me accept that without bitterness. Teach me to weigh what I know against what I am still learning, and to be patient where patience is needed. Let my heart be willing to follow where you lead, even if it is not where I would have chosen. Give me peace as I wait for the answer, and give me the courage to act when the time comes. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need your wisdom right now. Show me what is true, free me from fear and hurry, and help me see the next faithful step. Quiet my mind so I can hear you. I trust you with the outcome, and I am ready to act on what you make clear. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God plainly for the wisdom you lack, trusting that he gives generously and does not scold you for not already knowing. Let the request be as specific as the decision in front of you.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to surrender your own certainty. Pray it slowly, naming the ways you have been leaning on your own understanding, and ask God to guide the path you cannot yet see.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Read this as God speaking to you directly. Pray for an attentive heart that will notice his guidance, and thank him ahead of time for the instruction he has promised to give.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

This verse likens God’s word to a lamp for the feet. Pray that scripture would light the next step rather than the whole distant journey, and ask for the discipline to read it with an open mind.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for a renewed mind, asking God to loosen the habits of thinking that cloud your judgment. Ask him to help you test what is good, pleasing, and perfect against his character.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time and place where you will not be interrupted, such as early in the morning, after a walk, or at a table with a cup of coffee in front of you. Before you begin, write down the decision or concern in one or two sentences on paper. Read the prayer aloud slowly, pausing after each paragraph to let the words settle. Keep your hands busy if that helps you focus, perhaps by holding the paper or turning a ring. Some people find it helpful to pray with a trusted friend or spouse who can listen and agree with you in prayer.

When you finish, sit quietly for a few minutes and notice what comes to mind, without rushing to decide. Write down any thoughts, Scripture verses, or practical steps that stand out. You may need to return to this prayer several times over days or weeks, and that is normal. Discernment often unfolds gradually, so be gentle with yourself as you wait and keep listening.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows the end from the beginning give you clear sight for the road ahead. May he steady your heart when the choice feels heavy and guard your mind from anxious haste. May he make the next step plain, and may you walk it with courage and peace.
